Insurance write off, What catergory?

Hi,

A friend (Liam) got given a written off yq50 by another friend (George). It was written off by the insurance, but George can't remember what catergory it was written off at but he did buy it back off the insurance company. He doesn't have any of the documentation for it.

So Liam wants to establish what catergory it was written off at so he knows whether he legally ride it on the road (once MOT'd). How can he find out the catergory write off? He doesn't want to invest in a Cat B bike.

A HPI check will show which category it is. I use the RAC, it's £5 and gives a full report unlike some other HPI services.

It's unlikely to be anything other than a C or D, I've never heard of an insurance company selling the salvage rights back on a A or B.

Id ask george how bad the crash was,
Was it bad enough to do damage to the frame?
If it wasnt theres a high chance its cat C,
or if its very minor cosmetic cat D.

Likely C id say.

Nah frame wasn't bent (seen it myself), just the forks and some panel damage.

Which also makes me think its either a C or D, but just want to confirm this 100%.

I thought that too, they wouldn't sell CAT B's to individuals but only to 'certified' breakers.

I'm almost definate that its a CAT C or D; also George has still had to SORN the bike since it's been written off.

Hi,
Yes, Cat A = Crusher only (Not even spares are allowed to be taken from vehicle.) Very rare, usually vehicle is totally burnt out anyway, or if accident damaged, usually a fatality involved.

Cat B = Breaker only. Should be de-identified (I.e Vin numbers, reg numbers any identifying marks removed), although I've bought Cat Bs before with reg/vin in tact. Only a registered ELV recycler are allowed to purchase.

Cat C = Used to mean vehicle had structural damage, and would at least require a new rear quarter (for cars). Although these days the insurance companies have wised up, and you'll pretty much see any 10 yr old car or over being certified Cat C, even if it only has a dent in one door. All Cat Cs now have this noted on log book, and need to be checked by your local DVLA before a V5 is issued. The quality of the repair job is usually not taken into consideration, they basically look to see that parts from a stolen car have not been used in the repair job! I've seen proper, proper dodgy cut and shuts come back from the DVLA with a clean bill of health.

Cat D = Cosmetic damage. Or at least it used to. Once insurance companies realised they get paid more money from the recovery/salvage company for Cat Ds, higher end cars/bikes get classified at Cat D, even if they have MAJOR structural damage. I once bought a Morgan Aero 8 for the company I worked for, on closer inspection it required a new tub (monocoque), as well as a new engine. I've bought higher end cars as a Cat D, which were hardly worth breaking, and were almost certainly involved in a fatal accident. Indeed, congealed blood and body parts are not the best thing you can find in a footwell! Sick

Lower end cars that are classified as Cat D are generally cosmetic damage only, certified by a valuater from the old school! Cat D is not recorded on the V5, and doesn't require a VIC.

Cat X = Stolen/recovered or light vandal damage (I.e scratches or brake fluid on paint), or covered under Norwich Unions (Or possibly Farmers Union ?? Can't remember, it's been a while) old for new scheme.

My experience of salvage is only with cars, but I'm sure the same applies to bikes.

From what has been said it's 100% either a Cat C or D, probably a D. I know from putting a CAT C bike back on the road all you need is an MOT. This is unlike cars which need a ?RIC? check by the DVLA and an MOT. I'll pass on this information to Liam and he can get himself some transport.

OFFTOPIC: Once he gets it on the road he's planning to transfer almost all the parts off his minarelli 73cc race scooter (used to race it in Spain) to this yq50. This will be after he's imported his other bike so he's got something else for transport. He figured there is no leagues in which he can race it over here in England so he may as well put it in a road bike.
