No-tax cops nick drivers
By CLODAGH HARTLEY

TWO-FACED cops clamped a string of cars for not having road tax — then drove off in a police van with an out-of-date disc.

The team of 15 officers had shut down one lane of a busy dual carriageway and stopped hundreds of drivers.

Motorists who had failed to apply for tax were ordered out of their cars and had to cough up £80 on-the-spot fines.

A dozen who could not pay had their cars clamped — forcing delayed drivers to run for buses or trains.

But eagle-eyed passer-by Roddy Devine spotted the tax on the Metropolitan Police minibus ran out at the end of last month.

Yesterday construction worker Roddy, 37, told The Sun: “I couldn’t believe my eyes. It appears to be one rule for them and one rule for us.

“The police minibus had a tax disc valid only until January 31.

“There it was parked across the closed lane of the dual carriageway, while cars had to stop and be inspected for their own tax.

“Traffic had come to a standstill and drivers with no tax or out-of-date tax were ordered out of their cars, some of which were then clamped.

“People were left running for trains and buses or had to be picked up.

“And all the time the cop van was illegally on the road with no tax of its own.”

The three-hour police operation, which involved DVLA inspectors making checks on hand held computers, was staged in Lewisham, South East London, on Tuesday.

Furious Roddy pointed out the hypocrisy to embarrassed cops and told them he wanted to take a picture of their vehicle.

He said: “I told them I was coming back with my camera. But when I got back they had parked the minibus in a public car park and removed the disc.

“Eventually they drove away after three hours of stopping drivers.”

Fined motorists also had to fork out £120 as a deposit which would be refunded if a tax disc was presented within 14 days.

Clamped drivers had to find an extra £100 to free their car — or face an even higher charge if it was towed to a pound.

A Met Police spokeswoman confirmed the unmarked VW minibus — which had been hired — did not have the correct tax displayed.

She added: “It was immediately moved from the public highway and taken out of service.”

Acting Supt Neville Burton, from Lewisham Police, said: “There is a valid excise licence for our vehicle but due to an administrative error it had not been displayed.

“This was very unfortunate and has now been rectified.”

Motorists who fail to display a valid tax disc face an £80 penalty.

But in certain circumstances — like when a tax disc has been bought but not yet displayed — drivers can be let off.

And the police are applying that leniency to their own van.

Roddy, of New Cross Gate, London, added: “The police can obviously just let themselves off the hook on this one.

“They knew they had been rumbled because they whipped off the old tax disc.

“But the rest of us couldn’t do that or we could have to fork out for a hefty fine for not displaying it.”

In guildford the other night, as we were on out way out, going round a roundabout, police car, weaving in and out of cars well fast, so everyone gets out thier way. he pulls off from the lights at the exit, only to park up on double yellows outside a fish and chip shop. and he wasnt arresting anyone, cos we went back round again!

if they saw someone driving like that and parking thier its ticket time Evil or Very Mad

well it depends on your own experiences but.

1) cars without tax are cars without insurance so if you get knocked off by one = long legal battle with no guarantee of realistic compo - the police van "failing to display" would be guaranteed to be fully insured with the tax disc back at the office.

2) my other half is an ambulance technician and she drives under blue lights. it can happen quite often that they are overtaking traffic and driving at 90mph to a class 1 emergency and then get stood down on the way there as another vehicle has got there first or the call is a hoax or whatever, then they pull ito a layby (or a chip shop) and get slated by all the cars they just passed. It happens more often than you'd think and any of them gets caught abusing the priveleges of emergency driving they get sacked .. simple - no defence and that does apply to the police too so if you see and it looks suss report it .. otherwise you've no one to rant at but yourself

3) I have ridden out at loony speeds with bike cops in uniform many times, they are not really bothered by excessive speed AS LONG AS IT'S IN THE RIGHT PLACE.. 40 through town and they'll have you but 90 on an open road in the country with no traffic and you're being sensible - you might be unlucky and get a bollocking but if you're polite and sensible no ticket. If you're ever offered an observed ride with a bike cop take it, I've done loads and it does you no harm to be given some pointers by someone who is faster tahn you guaranteed

Just my opinion but I have had loads of good experiences with the police and I know they are just people trying to do a very difficult job against shed loads of wankers who really don't give a toss about anyone but themselves

so the one that called me a "f*cking c^nt" (totally unprovoked btw) for accelerating hard on an empty straight road in the dead of night was 'someone trying to do a difficult job' was he Mr C?

no

he was a self-righteous wanker who was in a group of coppers trying to intimidate me. Fact is I wasnt even speeding. How can you expect respect if you don't earn it? Confused

And that is only one of my many 'run-ins' with Kent police.

right, so this police car is on a callout. he works his round round and through the traffic, as he is on an emergency. But, he gets a call saying its a hoax or another car is there first. So he is then allowed to park on double yellows? Rolling Eyes

Mr C from the stories you were telling us about the police at the weekend and how down your way you get to go on organised FAST rides with uniformed police officers that dont do you. Now that sounds like so much fun. They are obviously good guys just out for a bit of fun. Cool

But at the same time as you know Mr Lucky and I went through hell last year and he had to pay over £1000 just to clear his name because some police officer was trying to earn his revenue. He was obviously selling the court a pack of lies Mad . It all turned out for the best in the end as the police officer changed his statement so many times and had made so many mistakes which left too many holes in his statements that it got thrown out of court THANK GOD. But at the same time it doesnt make up for all the money Mr Lucky had to forlk out just to clear his name and the months of sleepless nights because everything he had was at stake. Now there's a pig I would like to shoot. Evil or Very Mad

I suppose it is like everything there is good and bad but it seems the more people you talk to these days you find that not many of them still have much respect left for the police. My ex-boss was an ex-traffic cop and she even said this herself. Its all wrong I tell yah.

Another case, was when Mr Lucky and I were having a slow journey home late one night after going to the cinema and we got pulled by the police and fined £30 on the spot because APPARENTLY Lucky never gave way on the roundabout. Rolling Eyes For christs sakes the road was empty the police car was approaching the roundabout but was well back. No sooner had he fined us he pulled out of the garage when he stopped us and he had is blue lights flashing for someone else over the road. Mr Lucky had only just that second stepped back in the car and they were off after someone else. Now does that sound like they were trying to earn a revenue and some more little points for their stupid little books. Evil or Very Mad Mad

hey it's no good complaining to me Stephen, like I said if you think they aren't doing the job that you (I assume you pay tax) pay them for then complain to their superiors.. they are scrutinised so hard these days that it's taken seriously and junior coppers who abuse traffic priveleges are seriously shit on that's all.

And I did say it was down to you own experiences.

I clocked 11 points in six months a few years back for get this...

90 in a 30 with mate riding my bike with no license, no insurance - reported for causing or permitting only - result 4 points for both of us instead of ban
65 in a 40 - reported for 55 - result 3 points instead of 6
undertaking on M1 hard shoulder at "speeds in excess of 100" - bollocked for dangerous driving, reported for due care and attention - charged with speeding on the motorway - result another 4 points instead of 12 month ban

Why were they lenient - I was 19 at the time but knew it was a fair cop, admitted that I was wrong and was pleasant with them....

There are wankers everywhere you go in life and some people are unlucky .. .but the police are human and if you know you've been caught and are not shitty about it they're normally ok

I'm sure Mr Lucky can tell you a dozen similar stories where he's been let off for being polite and equally some shit where some wankers in uniform tried to stitch him up and lost

All I'm really saying is if you automatically disrespect them all for the fucking disgraceful anti bike antics of a few (all in cars - hardly ever bike cops) then they'll eventually shit on you and you can't win

So a 17 year old (eg: stephen) walks into a police station reports them and they'll get bollocked? Dont think so somehow do you Confused

Exactly you win some you loose some. It's like you said there are wankers everywhere. Some cops let the power go to their head but I know that there are others out there that are genuine nice guys. I see exactly what you mean Mr C just because you have had a bad experience with a few of them doesnt mean that you can speak badly of them all. Except PC ****** now you can all slate him. Wink

Seem to remember I saw a report on TV recently saying that most bent coppers in the Met are now drug-dealing. Now if I'm not mistaken, most crime nowadays is blamed on drugs, therefore the coppers (well the bent ones at least) are just making more work for themselves Confused

no wonder the country is so shit at the moment Confused

Well i have to disagree with you there Craig heres why.

1) The government have done such a good job of wasting all the money they make from road tax that no matter how many people dodge/pay it the cost would remain the same with virtully no chance of it dropping, if 100% of cars on the road paid road tax they would make up another excuse to put the cost of it up.

2) There would probably not be much effect to bike crime because the people who do it already are *not* scared of the concequences and the general population would more than likley not think twice about stealing someone elses bike. As for your house being looted im sure its not the police not putting people off doing it, its the way our culture has evolved, most of the people in modern society know its wrong to break into someone elses house and steal, those who want to do it are doing it already. If there were no police about you could take the law into your own hands and everytime some fucking twat breaks into your house you could take the law into your own hands and teach them not to do it again. Where as the way it works now is you break into someones house you trip or fall and you can sue whoever your robbing or if you get caught the concenquences are laughable.

Dont get me wrong the police are sometimes useful but there are a lot of them that abuse their powers and to be honest it pisses me off.

/rant over.

Ermm, thats great in therory andrew, but ok, people break into each other houses, and when it happens, you then want to find out who broke into yours. you use a bit of dective work, and then you find them, and then you punish them how you see fit.

This would work, but the police would have just been replaced by the largest people in any town, and so you are back where you started.

And I agree tax disc dodging costs everyone money craig.

Fact is guys it's not the police who are to blame for our increasingly shit society it's the wankers in the judiciary who think it's appropriate for a teenage joyrider to go on an adventure holiday and for a serial burglar to have a slap on the wrist.

Traffic cops are generally ok like I said but remember that if they have been doing the job for any length of time then they will at some time have scraped teeth bones and eyeballs offa the front of trucks and then had to go tell the guy's mother/wife/children that Daddy is never coming home...

..ride like a twat and one or the other will get you in the end
