the other day, i started the bike up and i got loud backfire from the exhaust. after that it wouldnt idle properly and was a b***d to get running. when i did get home i checked the plugs and they was sooty as hell, so i adjusted the fuel settings a little and a got a really load backfire from somewhere inside the engine. so adjusted again and this time it didnt back fire, it just wouldnt idle. so i adjusted again and BANG!! another one. i decided to just buy a replacement carb which i was told by company was set properly. ive fitted the carb and tried to start it up but was a running little rough and lots of white smoke come out of the exhaust. im now worried about hitting the starter again incase it backfires again and causes engine damage.

am i being silly here? should i jus continue to try and start it.

carbs cant be set up properly without being on the engine with it running. Yous set it up when you have the engine running.

Have you got a manual, not haynes, a proper one for that bike?

sorry cant be of more help!

im saying buying a new carb wasn't really needed, what bike is it?

I know that when my GS500e backfired it was because one cylinder was getting fuel and flooding and the other just wast getting any fuel.

I'd say set the carb to the same spec as the manufacturer reccomends then tweak it to match your bike. check your spark plugs for a weak spark or coated plug, set the gap properly, put some choke on and hit the starter.

That worked for me but im not mechanic, i also noticed cleaning my air filter helped considerably.
