Hey guys,

Sorry to post another leathers question but search didnt turn that much up.

Basically I'm looking to buy a 1 peice. Now like everyone it would be great if I could get a lovely italian made suit but again like most people I can't afford the prices for the off the peg brand names.

What I wanted to know was your opinion on the following options. I currently have about £400 to spend.

Do I A) Save up for the common Alpinestars, Dainese off the pegs
B) Save up for some a more exotic suit such as Spidi, Spyke, Axo, Texport etc.
C) Spend £350 on the RST Pro Race suit, or £300 on a Frank Thomas I tried on.

Another problem as well is I no where seems to have a lot of these suits near me, so trying them on is going to be hard. I didnt want to get a race hump but decided that despite looking the nads, I don't really need one and may look a bit gay on an NSR.

Cheers,
Cougs.

Really dull answer, but get whatever fits you and is comfortable. Unless you're an amazingly standard size and they all fit you the same, that'll probably be the decider.

Might be worth a trip to somewhere that will have a decent range in stock, try 'em all and then make up your mind.

yeah i second what zak says. like bendy says whatever fits..when i went to buy my suit there was only one size that fitted me and it fitted perfectly..i had to spend £150 more than i wanted but it was worth it. I know that the wrong size suit can be a little dangerous as opposed to one that fits as if its too big the protection can just move about and cause all sorts of problems. if its too tight it can cut off your circulation..bin there abd one that with gloves. 2 piece suit is much more practical unless you want to start racing youll need a 1.

Definitley a one piece. They make you 20mph faster everywher just coz they feel so good.

Humps are a bit wank unless you are a serious track addict.

I have a set of off the peg Kushitani's Cool .. very nice but very expensive.

Don't Don't Don't buy Frank Thomas . . they are Ok but usually way overpriced and suspect quality. I have an old set that I saw within 2 months of buying at half the price (at the bmf - see later)

Someone once said to me "do you know that there are now two man-made things you can see from space - the great wall of china and the Frank Thomas returns pile" Laughing Laughing Laughing

I have said it b4 and I'll say it again. If you want to buy kit like leathers go to the bmf rally in May at Peterborough - what it will cost you in petrol or train fares from Devon you will more than save in a quality leather suit and there will be literally THOUSANDS of sets to choose from and 10s of thousands of like minded nutters to enjoy the day with...

Cheers for your help guys.

Why a 1 Peice?

Reason mainly being that I've already got a decent Jacket and Cordura jeans. Ideally I would like to get into track days when I upgrade my bike, and I've been investigating avenues in the Navy with regards to racing etc and it seems quite interesting.

I reckon that a 1 peice is the best bet to suit my long term needs, and that for general riding the Leather Jacket and Cordura trousers will do for everyday riding.

I do understand the practicalities of a leather 2 peice and if I'm barking up the wrong tree with a 1 peice id be happy to hear arguments against.

Cheers,
Cougs.

Arguement for 1 piece:

No zip to come apart in the middle
You will always use it all, and not just grab the jacket
better protection

argument against:

the one piece will be a hassle to put on and if youre anything like me, more often than not you'll just think f**k it and not wear it. 2 piece is good 'cos it suits impatient people like me Very Happy

A bit, but a decent two piece should be just as good in 95% of the sitautions.

Cheers for the help.

Mr C,

Apreciate the comments, i'd love to go to the show and I agree that the selection and size variety will probably be much better. however unfortunately I won't be able to get there as (all going well) will be in the Navy by then.

Cheers,
Cougs

1 piece is all well and good on the bike, but walk into a shop or down the high street wearing one and you look like judge dredd and feel an utter tit.

unless your zim and just really want to a power ranger. then you look and feel cool.

ok but it's still bike gear

I've been wearing various combinations of leather and textile since the mid 1980s and the one pieces on the market today are the best way to go imho

who cares what you look like off the bike, it's what you look and feel like on it that counts - the ONLY time that 1 piece is not good is if you have the trots and need to take a dump in a hurry after swimming in the river Trent

If im riding somewhere with the purpose of my time on the bike, I'll use textile stuff. If im going for a ride for fun, then ill use my leathers generally (unless its fecking cold)

NO Shocked

I have a two piece, one with the zip in the middle and I love them. They are so much easier and I can imagine more comfortable. It's like if you are out on a hot day and you stop off somewhere you can just unzip the top or you can leave it hanging down and it's a godsend. I love my leathers they were my first present off Mr Lucky and I dont think I would ever change them unless I come off or get really fat that is.

Mr Lucky has both and he mostly wears the two piece and keeps the one piece for drag racing.

''big up the two pieces'' Very Happy

Mr C what was all that about the River Trent LMAO! Laughing

a bunch of us went white water rafting near Nottingham in the Trent where that have set up a concrete "big water" course .. it's quite good.

but after a couple of goes down in the boat (and bearing in mind that we have no sense and no fear) we asked the instructor if we could swim it.... go figure Twisted Evil

anyway he looked at us like we were 'kin bonkers, rolled his eyes and said "if you must"

so myself and a mate just jumped in at the top of the course and swum/floated/sunk our way down.. you get a serious dunking and end up drinking a lot of water .. it's very fast and very deep

it's also not very nice water and makes your bottom runny .. VERY

next day was the bmf rally at Peterborough and I decided to risk it .. by the time I got there I was in REAL trouble, and wearing 1 piece

imagine the rest... Shocked Shocked

btw if you can undo a jacket and hang it round your waist you can do the same with the top half of a 1-piece

but it's different for girls for the reasons outlined above... Wink Wink

i got a 2 piece, and its easier in the sense, you dont have to jump around like a monkey to get into it, but i never wear the jacket/trousers on their own, cos the jacket is really short (so it looks stupid without the trousers)for 2 pieces, and the trousers come up higher than normal trousers, something to do with taking pressure off the zip/seams in the event of a crash

i always walk around in my 2 piece, shopping and bike meets etc, only unzip it at macdonalds cos it affects movement and i know i will spill something down me Razz

yes people stare, but i kind of like that...now Smile nice to be a bit different

only problem is spending all day in leathers in hot weather or at the NEC or something (ick) you can get very hot, and a 2 piece might relieve some of this, but i was wearing mine most of the day to save carrying it, and i still got very hot

Don't quite understand that comment G. Have you had any problems in the past with them? I would disagree strongly that they are a shoddy make and I can assure you that I would kit my love of my life out with nothing the best quality clothing I could afford. I presume that you or someone you know has had a bad experience with Dianese in the past (tell us the goss)

I wear Dianese myself and feel confident that they are up to the job they are designed to do.

My Dianese one piece are excellent and I have owned them now since 1997 and have had no problems. I find that one piece are less practical (obviously) for a few reasons. Less space to store your phone/wallet/pot plant as they usually have only one pocket which is inside of the chest around about where your armpit is and it is big enough for two 1st class stamps.

The other downside of course has been covered here and I can only agree that number twos are a touch difficult if you are in a hurry.

The hump works well at speed and doubles as an upper spine protector. Full body armour is a useful thing to have and any set of leathers two or one piece, should have this (CE approved is good).

My two piece (well really a kind of mix and match as I have more than one jacket) means that I can do the touring thing in comfort without being pulled into a race crouch. All half decent one piece leathers are cut for riding position which means you look like an ape when you are walking around off the bike.Laugh yea not at the baggy arsed leather clad biker at any bike meet/show as he/she strolls around with a 'trickle arse'!

I have a light summer jacket which zips onto my leather trousers when I need to stay a bit cool. Great storage and bodyarmour and it is relatively shower proof. Just the job for the longer summer rides when I am not 'railing' (that's for the one-piece). I have a heavier jacket for the colder months of the year (all 11 of them) and again it has full bodyarmour. It is excellent when the weather turns cold, especially on those longer rides. Great storage, plenty of pockets inside and outside for all the little nik-naks. Both jackets and the one piece have a removable inner lining if the weather really heats up and this means that nasty smells can be machine washed away too.

I would say that for me I wore my 2 piece stuff 90% of my riding miles last year for reasons of practicality. If you are a track day fiend then a one piece is the obvious choice. Some 2 pieces aren't even allowed on track days. Make sure if you do buy a two piece that you get one with a full waist zip and not just a small length of zipper at the base of your spine.

Also make sure that if you mix and match, that the zip system is common to the jacket and the pants or you will have wasted your money. The jacket will ride up in a slide and you really don't want that (trust me on that one).

Cougar, what ever you get I hope you are happy with. I am sure you won't regret it.

Any leathers are better than none...

Agree with Lucky re: body armour, plus 1 piece is much more comfortable with a full on spine protector.

(except I can't get mine on now with the spine protector as I am a fat bastard wearing leathers made for Japanese "export") Sad
