Happened to me with a car I bought off ebay last year.

Basically, you're only liable from the moment you bought the bike. Theoretically you should have sent of the SORN form immediately (you can download this from the DVLA website but I think hardly anyone knows that this is possible).

They threatened to fine me but I think in the end it came to nothing since I SORNed it as soon as they sent me the V5 through. If they try to fine you ask why you can't just pay the back tax.

No - I mean you're only liable for the tax for the weeks between when you told DVLA you bought the bike and when they received the SORN notification - which is probably much less than whatever the fine would be.

If you tell them that you thought it was on SORN before you bought it then they should let you off with just paying that small amount of tax.

If you read the blurb in the book that comes with the V5 it says you have 2 months to SORN it after purchase IIRC. A bit pee if the DVLA take 8 weeks to send you your v5! Laughing

I declared SORN on a bike 3 weeks ago after a 6 month gap and I have the sorn notification but no fine yet.

I just had a look and can't find that bit. Is it possible they removed this when they switched over to "continuous enforcement" (aka fine the buggers into submission)?

I was told definitively by one of the women on the DVLA helpline that you are meant to send off a SORN notice (or phone) the day you buy the vehicle. But judging by the random things DVLA are prepared to tell you that could be b*****it as well I suppose!

I'll stop now, or I'll have to do my rant about trying to get tax discs when your insurance docs haven't come through yet...

All you'll have to do is show proof of when you purchased it. You aren't responsible for the time you didn't own the bike.
