A very brief summary of my weekend.

Thought I’d try the course as a way to gain my lost confidence.

Yesterday was day one. After over 4 hours in the classroom listening to road safety techniques but mainly how to corner in the lanes quicker (wondering what I was doing there as I have no interest in fast riding anymore) I was taken out with another guy who had been riding for 30 years, all year round (this guy was quick). Well I was playing catch up and learned very little.

What a waste of time. I was marked very poorly and felt like I’d may as well sell the bike (They mark you as they would an advanced rider). Did more harm to my confidence then I could have possibly imagined. Didn’t want to go back for the second day at all but had nothing better to do, so I figured f*ck it, I’ll go.

Day two. Got a one and one session today with a different observer as a couple of people didn’t turn up. Was asked if they’re was anything I wanted to say before we started. I explained that I haven’t rode quickly for along time ( I just like to cruise around these days) so he had me lead to begin with so that he knew what speed to lead me when it was my turn to follow. What a difference that made when it was my turn to lead again! I forgot my bike could lean over! Cornering quickly is fun! I love my bike. I’ve still got to practice what I learned over the past two days but it’ll come. Got decent marks on the assessment, not amazing but it’s a start (nearly all 3’s for those that have attended themselves and a couple of twos) .

I remembered two things today

A. I can ride.

B. That riding is so much f*cking fun.

Really pleased I went in for the second day. Even considering advanced lessons now. Looking forward to summer at last. Look out North Wales, Flip is back.

This was bikesafe with the police?

I wasn't that impressed with the one I did, but am quite liking my local IAM group - while others have found the opposite for their areas.

The bikesafe I went to, they did make some attempt to group us by experience when going out, at least.

That's the one.

Yeah, that was the point of all the introduction stuff in the morning. Not really sure what happened there tbh. But day two helped my alot. Although a lot of the classroom stuff I knew. I 'spose it depends were you arew with your riding skills etc. But for me, it was what I needed.

Thinking of joining my local IAM group. Smile

My IAM group has the whole "the first one's on the house" thing, so you can get an idea if you like it or not before dishing out money.
Definitely worth having a look if they do that.

Hey flip mate, long time no see!

Let me know if you want to go out at some point, I could do with a confidence boost at the moment as I'm pretty p*ssed off with biking at the moment.

The BikeSafe that I did last year in Staffordshire was free and run by the police force. Okay it was only a dead basic hour and a half, but it principle aim was to assess your riding and to make sure that you were basically a safe rider. If they could point out anything to you in order for you to improve your riding, they would do that. It wasn't about riding faster or cornering harder etc, it was about staying as safe and aware as possible whilst riding.

Did I learn anything? Well a few little things maybe and I got a good report from the copper who assessed me and I have also taken at least one of the comments on board and adapted my riding style to suit. Thumbs Up

Stafforshire BikeSafe is well worth an hour and a half of anyones time. Smile

If you dont mind me asking, what made you loose your confidence in the first place?

I went out on one to (though it is called roadkraft in northants) I wanted the track day one but all the places were full and also no more money from the goverment.............long story.
I myself went out with a copper he was pleasant and we had a laugh esp when he said my bike was quick (I left him standing a few times) overall I was pleased with what he told me and how he marked me down.I would recommend it but you have to be polite and no chip on your shoulder cos he is a copper he is after all the same as us just with a uniform on.
I also liked your latter part of the post when the bloke asked you what you thought about what you are learning when you replied the truth you were then given a better lesson,so it pays to tell people what you expect from the course rather than just turn up though it works both ways,I would of thought they would of asked you Q's before you started and what you wanted to get out of the course and your riding style. So you could get more out from the lessons it was a bit funny when I took my 2 hours ride as everyone though he nicked me for something or other.

Hittin' black ice not long after I got the bike. Lost all faith in two wheels rather than just the weather. I used to be a good rider but that knocked me back a hell of a lot. Never really got to know the then new bike.

Bromborough Fire Station I think, I just had to go to the council office on Canning Street (?) to pay the fee as I think it has to be sorted by Weds!

I contacted jennyjewsbury@wirral.gov.uk, if that helps.

Just got back from mine, what a fooking TOP weekend.

First day I was nervous, and almost hit something at 80mph whilst on a dual carriageway (Don't ask) so had a bit of a shit first leg of the ride, but once I'd got my head around road positions stuff started to flow a lot better.

Went to Ponderosa today, and practiced taking one stretch of road using the same gear, without braking, and OH MY GOD, had a MASSIVE grin inside my lid all the way, nothing beats the feeling of taking a bend confidently, in the correct position and revs, I really can't belive how good a day it was, the people running it were absolutely fantastic.

I rode today half blind though, as I lost a contact lens, they couldn't do enough to help though, even factored in an opticians into the group ride so I could try and get it sorted (no luck) Sad someone had a few too many last night and they rode to HER house and breathalysed her, as they didn't want her to miss out on the days ride!

I'd definately recommend it, I'm going for more advanced training as soon as I have the money, it's made me realised exactly how capable my bike is.
