Hi,

Basically got talking to this engineer about needing a replate for my rg125f barrel, but he said that I ought not to and instead get the barrel resleeved then consequently run the bike with a ts125 piston. He said that way I can get rebores and go upto 2.5mm IIRC oversized, also the resleeve would cost about the same as getting a replate done. I then asked him if it would affect performance at all, to which he replied that in the minority some riders complain about a performance loss but the majority say that its no different. So I then asked why do the majority of newer two strokes all have nicosil bores? He replied that its for a number of reasons of which one is that they're cheaper to produce at the factory so the manufacturers save money. But then they don't pass on the savings to you, i.e. Yamaha TZR125 4dl barrel ~£650, Yamaha TZR125 barrel ~£300. He also said that he's done resleeves on a number of MX bikes and other 2t's e.g. RD500s, RGV250s etc and they've all yielded good results.

Well I bought the standard rg125f piston now so I'm going to get a replate done but for future reference, is there any truth in this engineers arguments? In short, is a resleeve a good option over a replate? Does it offer similar performance with the added option of the ability to go for the cheaper option of rebores?

Ta,
Jack

I always thought that the nicasil was supposed to be harder wearing than a standard barrel. What you may find is that it is a lot cheaper to rebore than to replate, once you have replaced the nicasil sleeve, but that you have to do it more often.

FWIW, I got a nicasil plating done for £125 at a place in Bristol, if you use good quality oil and look after the engine (i.e. warm it up properly before caning it) then that's every 20k miles.

Cheers

To the best of my knowledge there is only two places in England which actually replate cylinders, one being in Gloucester and the other in Weston Super Mare. Other places simply send the barrels away to these places to get it done.

Here's PJ engineering take on resleeving barrels:

Any more thoughts?
