You ride a bike, yet want to get a BMW.... Which seems to be amoung the worst drivern car on the road, and then wonder why the ins is so high.....
Add in 22 new driver and you can just see the Inc co's rubbing hteir hands with glee Laughing

For waht you will pay to buy and keep that 318 on the road, never mind the ins will run a almost brand new super mini. Which if you work it right will cost less to tax and run than your bike.

For speed use yer bike.
For lugging stuff get a car any old car will do and stuff how it looks. Embarassed Its only a tin box. Karma

so i think to my self lets get a car,, i do a few lessons, find the car i want.. bmw 318 is 1.8 weighs a ton,, doubt it will even do a ton it looks respectable though which is all im after as far as a car goes.

Actually, weighs a fair bit more than a tonne - which means that if you slide sideways into pedestrians you're probably going to walk away.
While the bike weighs a lot less and you're likely to be more cautious as any minor loss of traction can see serious injury to yourself.

Car insurance is much more affected by NCB than bike insurance it seems to me. I have 7 years NCB on a car, and only one year on a bike.

I drive a 330 Cabby, and the insurance for me on that is £1100 (FC) I think, but if I had one or two years years NCB I wouldn't even be able to insure it at all.

When you first get a car, it has to really be insurance group 5 or under to get half decent quotes. Even though a 318 (I presume you mean an E36) isn't that dear or quick, I'd imagine it'll be about insurance group 11 or 12. That's a no no for a new driver. I had a Saxo VTR when I was 18, insurance group 7, and even with 1 years NCB it was £1800.

Afriad you need to start looking at small hatchbacks!

3rd party liability exposure on young and inexperienced drivers is greater in a car than on a bike.

ie you are more likely to do more damage to someone else on the road whilst you are in a car than if you were on a bike.

Thats hit it on the nose, for tp insurance they look at how much damage you might cause to others, a bike does very little compared to a car.

To the OP - If your really into biking rain or shine get a crap old car, say a mid 90's nissan micra, cheap to insure and seem to just run and run forever. It may be the most embarrassing tin box on the planet but its a tool not a toy.

Obviously i dont take my own advice and have a nice looking car which is not known for reliability or fuel economy but i am also more of a fair weather rider Embarassed
