Well my rear knobbly tyre is nearly at the end of its life on my drz 400. Went greenlaning last weekend with a bloke on a wr250, and he had a rear trail tyre - without knobbles. He was telling me that they are more grippier on the slate and rocks but not so much on the mud, and obvioulsy because they don't have knobbies there better on the road.

As i use my bike for every day commuting, and off-roading every other weekends i thought they might suit me better.

So just like to ask if they are worth getting, to replace the rear knobbly. I know that michelin do one type not sure on anyone else ? Tyres mean a lot off the road, so i want to confirm that im getting a decent one before i just buy a 'pretty' one.

Are you thinking of a trials tyre?

Like on of these:

Plenty of people find them a good mix for trail and commuting.

Yea that looks like the ones. I also like to go up to a local dirt track from time to time, surely these tyres wouldn't suit that ?

Quite a few enduros request you use them these days as they chew up the ground less than fuill-on dirt tyres.

The trick is to run them at lower pressures with rimlocks - at which point you should get pretty decent amounts of grip in most conditions; the tyre will deform to give a wide contact area rather than digging in.

Ok thanks for the reply, and can i ask what is rimlocks ?

I always lower my pressure in my knobbly tyres for off-roading anyway

It stops the tyre from spinning without the rim, because it'll take the inner tube with it, ripping the valve off.

I'm not entirely sure how the rim lock works tbh, but that's what they look like.

As gaz said; and I believe they basically clamp the tyre onto the Rim.
