Hi All.

I realise this maybe a real stupid basic question but my son has a Rieju RS2 50cc 2-stroke moped. Even though I have always had bikes (currently a blackbird!) they have been 4-strokes and I change the oil and filter at the required intervals.

Thing is I just dont know with his bike! I know he has to fill up a tank with 2-stroke oil, but does the bike also need a change of sump oil and filter like a 4-stroke?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks All.

Yes it will need oil changes, although the oil only serves the gearbox so you need to check whether you need gear oil or regular engine oil.

You will need to change the oil in the sump as it lubricates the gearbox (usually referred to gearbox oil on 2 strokes), although in my experience the interval on them tends to be longer than a 4 stroke.

As said above, trans oil needs changing every so often, find out what it needs and then change it and find out how often it needs doing too.

Thanks for the answers, its most appreciated.

There is a very small filler cap where it usually is on the lower right hand side of the engine, but there is not a viewing oil level eye glass so I cant tell if it needs topping up!!

Might ring Rieju and find out.

Thanks All.

Have you taken the filler cap out?

On my dads RD and my RX-S there is a little dipstick on the cap.

On my scooter though there isn't anything. Only way to find out how much is in there is to drain it I assume.

On a few bikes (my old H100 and the MZ amongst others), there's no sight glass or dipstick, but there is a level screw in the side of the crankcase.

Remove it, and pour oil in (slowly) through the filler until it starts coming out of the hole. You've then reached your level. It really doesn't need to be massively accurate for a 2 stroke gearbox.

the best oil would be
2 stroke light gearbox oil about 75w putoline do a good one
the four stroke gearbox oils tend to make the clutch a bit sticky on the small 2t

If he can find out what oil the dealer would use that will be the best for the bike. I'm using 10W40 in my RX-S and it works fine.

I think I put 10W 30 in my DT as that's what the manual said to do.

yes those oils will work ok ie 10w40 and 10w30
but small cc 2t's will always go better on the 75w oil as there is less drag caused by it i have used it to no ill effect in my rgv250p i also get a smother gear-change
but this is just my opinion
