I have recently bought my kids a mini trials bike. They are 10 and 13 years old, so obviously no licenses, and the bike itself is not licensed, a kids bike basically. But hell of a lot of good fun!

But I want to take them somewhere to ride on it, where I'm not likely to get grief off the local NIMBYs. Anyone know of anywhere suitable? Preferably somewhere in the north west, Manchester/Preston/Wigan/Burnley/ Bolton area.

Only private land or closed tracks, otherwise you will find that us TRF members (AKA nimbys)will report you for screwing up our hobby,do the right thing and no-one can bother you ,good luck.

garyd i have had a look at the TRF and it seems quite interesting.

i am however still quite unsure as to where i am allowed to ride, i do have tax insurance so i can ride on green roads? is that it along with private land?

also if i was on a bike i am uninsured on it would only be prive land am i correct?

if i see a lane at the side of a road what signs do i need to look out for to tell me if i am allowed down, i seem to understand that if there is a Footpath or Bridleway sign i am not allowed down? but any other lane im allowed down?

would be a great help if some one could clear this up thanks

A bit further down I found "One for those in the NE", don't know if it's near you, but probably worth a look

As a non-motorcycling responsible adult, I would love to give my kids the opportunity to get involved in an exciting sport such as motocross.

Obviously not having been previously involved in the sport, I don't know the rules, regulations or controlling bodies, but was recommended this site as somewhere where I might be able to ask for advice and find the answers. True, perhaps I shouldn't have referred to local NIMBYs, but from an outsider's viewpoint that is exactly the kind of image that motocross has.

Which, I now realise, is completely understandable. The respondent's advice is to 'go and do the right thing'. Advice I can either interpret as to go join the TRF, although the respondent later responds to a thread hijacker's comment by indicating that this organisation is incapable of responding to its members needs, or that I should go forth and multiply.

Either way, it clearly demonstrates the excluding, self-centred attitude of those involved in motocross, and I can now totally understand why it is the most vilified outdoor sport in the country. No wonder that the 'yeah ride anywhere, no-one will mind' attitude is so pervasive.

Good luck.

Well bit of an apology from me also......you have now made it crystal that what you actually want them to do is ride on a motox track!!"somewhere to ride on it "means something totally different to me,so i hope you can respect my points on not encouraging illegal "off road"activities,as for closed tracks in your area ,do a google there are plenty.I think you are getting motox and trail riding confused, motox is on private land, run by clubs ,trail ridng is on legal motorcycles,on legal byways, both different and i am not excluding anyone ,merely stating that if you want to trail ride you will do it legally or be faced with that "excluding "attitude cause no one that rides illegally will screw it up for me ,i will report you myself first, you as a responsible adult (your words ,not mine)would surely not allow your children to ride illegally in the park or elsewhere,i am doing the same ,and plenty like me ,its the only way we will continue to ride all we have left, join a local motox club and all will be sweet Thumbs Up

Sort the attitude out. He came here to ask for advice, not to be talked down upon by some cock.

Garyd apology accepted. And apologies too if I seemed a little annoyed - I was! If I didn't give a toss I would have just gone out on it anywhere, but no, I came on here to ask if anyone knew of a suitable place.

Forgive my ignorance. I've tried to google 'closed tracks' and got plenty of stuff about American redwood forests, but little that seems relevant. What is a closed track? Going out on the bike for the first time this weekend, so am getting a bit desperate as to where to take them on it.

Hiya, have you tried Peakdale Youth Motorcycle club? It's near Buxton (too far?). We go there with our 6 yr old...he loves it! It's really well organised and has 4 motox tracks for kids, 1 for adults and a trials area (dont know age required for this). You need to be a member to ride. It's generally open every other Sunday and Wednesday nights up until October. They have a website, but no idea on how to do a link!!! Very Happy
