PostPosted: 09:36 - 19 Jun 2008    Post subject: Scottoiler problem (I think) Reply with quote

I bought a bike off a friend and it has a scottoiler installed. However when I came back to the biek the morning I noticed a litle dark patch (I think of oil) on the drive under where the cable of the oiler come out.

On closer inspection it appears that the end bit is just hanging over space rather than being directly over the chain. This also just appears to be a bit of plastic tubing.

Trouble is I have no clue how the scottoiler is supposed to deliver oil to the chain so don't know if I just re-adjuct the tube or whether domething is missing/has fallen off.

The chain appears to be well oiled so I assume it's been working until recently.

Anyone help?

On my bike, the Scottoiler delivery tube is just a piece of black plastic tubing. Mine is positioned so the oil is delivered to the outside of the rear sprocket, at the bottom of it just above the chain.
If you visit Scottoiler's website, they generally have fitting instructions in .PDF format for most bikes.

As for the drip - this should not be happening. All delivery should cease once the engine is off (the scottoiler works from an engine vacuum). You might get the odd drip, but certainly never enough to leave a pool/puddle.

I would check to see if everything is connected properly (vacuum hose, breather, delivery hose), & check the oiler is not set to 'prime' (adjustment is at the top of the reservoir).

If it still continues to drip, give Scottoiler a call - they are very helpful - i had a similar problem with an old one of mine, eventually they asked me to post it up to them and rebuilt it for free.

With the recent hot weather the normal blue oil also becomes quite runny and can make a bit of mess.. mine has recently.

Actually, looking at the instructions I just downloaded from the website the tube just ends halfway along the swingarm - is it possible the dispenser assembly just fell off???

Yes it definitely is possible as it happened to me.
You should have a clear plastic tube with a white plastic sleve over it, and a thin black nozzle at the end.

https://www.chaingang.com.au/shop/images/uploads/INJECTORCLOSEUP.jpg

Like that.
you just need to bend the black bit (heat it in hot water to make bending easier) so that its just off the sprocket face dripping oil down onto the chain.
On mine the black bit fell off (or maybe got caught in the chain or something) so i rang scotoiller and told them my tube had snapped and they sent me another one out free of charge - i was very pleased with the customer services, had no arguments or anything and they were very helpful.

HTH

Gaz.

Turn your scotoiler to off for the time being too, saves you wasting oil.

Can you explain how to do that in non-technical words of 1 or less syllables?

The big platic reservoir where you store the oil that a black turning thing on the top with numbers on it. Turn it to 0 (all the way round clockwise i think) - that stops any oil coming out - or at least slows it enough so that virtually nothing comes out.

I just went out and had a look at the bike and tried to dial the oiler down to zero but it's really difficult to tell where to measure it from??

Here's a pic under the seat, you can see the direction of maximum (i.e. 9) and all I did was turn it the other way as far as it'll go - is that right?

Also here's the end of the oiler does it look like the end has fallen off?

Yes you turned it correctly and yes the end has broken off. Razz

I did a write-up of Scottoiler fitment to my SV in the show-and-tell section of the forum. Have a look at the pics in there. Thumbs Up

I have had a reply from the Scottoiler people:
Mr Scottoiler chap wrote:

Hi Andy,

it look as thought the injector nib has fallen out of the dispenser, due to a pretty poor installation. I've attached a few photos showing how it should be on your model. as you can see, you use a small dispenser plate and clip (codes RM-150062 and RM-150065) and a small section of the white sleeve you have around the end of your dispenser plus an injector nib. You then mount it on the paddock stand lug, either with bobbin or just a bolt.
Set up like this, you will have a neater, more reliable install using less oil and with much less mess. You can buy any of the above mentioned spares or fittings, either from our online shop https://www.scottoiler.com/pc/Category_Motorcycle_Spares_;am;amp;_Accessories.html or by phoning sales on the number below.

Regards, Mark.

Unfortunately I'm not too sure I get this.

Is he saying I just need to buy one of these
https://www.scottoiler.com/pc/Motorcycle_Spares_;am;amp;_Accessories/Dispenser_Plate_(stainless_steel).html

one of these:
https://www.scottoiler.com/pc/Motorcycle_Spares_;am;amp;_Accessories/Dispenser_Plate_Clip_(stainless_steel).html

and one of these:
https://www.scottoiler.com/pc/Motorcycle_Spares_;am;amp;_Accessories/Injector_Tubes_(2_pieces).html

rather than just the last one?

I can't see why it was a bad assembly to start with? I thought I'd just need a new nib?

thye do have different accessories for mounting on certail different bikes.

My installation before i bought the dual injector looked just like yours as that was how the instructions told me to do it.

saying that - my injector went awol to .......

you could get away with just buying the nibs, but i guess to do it properly youd want the other bits - if ya got everything it would only cos £3 so if thats what theyve recommended id probably do that.

I'd just put a new nib on... you could easily make your own.

A bit of black vacuum tubing, cut to the length you want, use a lighter to mushroom the end which goes into the delivery tube. If you heat the end of the black piping slight it will curl over giving you a mushroom sort of shape. Shove that end in the delivery tube and the other do a tapered cut and line it up to nearly touching the chain and sprocket. That's what I'd do, but if you'd rather buy the bits you should be fine.
