Flip front helmets...

Now I've got myself another road only bike, I need new gear for road use.. and also need a new helmet for road use as my current helmets are a bit battered from stunt riding

A lot of my riding planned is touring... so I am considering a flip front helmet, think it'd be a lot more convineint for touring? dual visors are a good idea and saves carrying an extra visor with me... and I think the flip would be handy.

Just after some thoughts and opinions on these helmets and if anyone has one?

I went to J&S today, the IXS is the best looking one and doesn't look like a flip helmet , the second visor looks a lot bigger too whereas I've read about the Cabergs second visor being a bit too small and not covering your field of vision enough....

The IXS has coolmax lining, quick strap, pinlock visor etc... and is £120.. the Justissimo is £150

The quality on the caberg looks marginally better.. but don't think there's much in it to be honest....

By the way, I seem to have developed a problem.... I am really struggling to ride with the visor down, seem to get rather claustrophobic and can't concentrate properly!!! Not sure why this has happened... so the dual visor would be even more handy as I can have the main visor up and still not get blinded as the second visor covers eyes etc... anyone else have this same problem?? I don't think I ever used to be like it

ONE OTHER THING.. I do not want a flip to ride open faced that looks stupid.. it's more a convenience thing, not to ride lookin like a gimp

Ah just one more thing I remember...

I know I've slightly made my mind up on the IXS already but thought I'd mention.. the chin bit of the caberg seemed really flimsy compared to the IXS.

I heard somewhere that some flip up lids are tested as a open faced lid so the chin bar is basically useless. Probably best to a bit of research check it isn't one of them.

I've got the justisumo GT. Bit heavy, but they all are. Did well in crash.
Sun visor sits a little too high for me, even when full down. My plan is maybe to stick some tape in it and use like those strips you get to put on the top of your visor to help block out low sun.

I have got the caberg V2, its not a flip-up but has the twin visors and it is a cracking helmet for touring, Its nice to ride through scenic places with the main visor up and the sun visor down.

Those flip up jobbies have never appealed to me, mainly because whenever i stop i tend to take my helmet off, especially if I am somewhere nice and warm

FWIW I have a Nolan. My second one, the first was also a Nolan flip-up. Bought the 2nd because I liked the first.

I like it because the visor is notched so I can just raise it a little.

I was warned against the Justissimo as being a bit noisy. I know flip fronts are noisy but was told the Caberg was even more so.

Also be aware that the best as in quietest flip front is said to be the Schuberth but best try these as I don't have the right shaped head. It'll also cost a bit more than £150

the shark Evo is nice I tried one on in a Shop recently its sort of like the roof boxer in that you can flip the chin bar all the way round the back and us it as an open face without the drag penalty of the Jussimo (though I am told you can disassemble the chin bar off the jussimo and the Nolan flip fronts), kind of expensive though £220 best price.

What are these helmets (the ones which cost about £120) normally made of. Is it the plastic stuff which lasts 18ish months before needing a renewal, or the composite plastic which lasts 5 ish years or the kevlar compsite which has a 20 year life span.

I currently have a shoie raid II but I would like a helmet with a sun visor as I dont like using inserts.

It's just i prefer to buy kit that i shouldnt need to replace until i damage it (or need new colours)

I've been thinking, and researching a bit more...

Not too sure if it's the flip front that appeals to me or the dual visor.... so I've looked into full face helmets with the flip down sun visor...

Come across this HJC FS-10 which looks rather good..

anyone got this one in carbon?

I've got the original Justissimo, and my only complaints with it were the useless front vent and the fact it's a noisy bastard. The GT looks like they've fixed the vent, at least, hopefully they've made steps toward the latter too.

I'm on the lookout for a new sunvisored flip-front myself, so I'll be interested to see how you fare. I'd only been scratting around on the net thus far but I've got:
Nolan N103 Classic, ~£200
Schuberth C2, ~£300
HJC FS-MAX, ~£180
Airoh SV55-S, ~£135
If you can find physical examples, some of these might be worth exploring.

I've not found out the real shape of my head yet, unfortunately, so my used spectrum has been limited, to the extent that I'm having to move to non-flipfront lids to try stuff on. If I think about it all I really want as prime factors to narrow down a choice are the sun visor and pinlock - nobody seemed to want to sell me one for the Caberg and the Fog Citys don't quite cut it.

I'll be interested to know how you get on.

sparks, forgive me if im wrong but I believe the hjc helmet in your most recent pic is the HQ-1. Its quite a bit more expensive at £250ish. I've been looking at the IS-16 which isnt a flip front helmet, but still has the double visor and looks pretty nice. Only £130.

If I were to buy a flip front I would be slightly paranoid about the mechanism breaking and flipping open in an off. Thats just me though.
