SRAD 600
Hi guys, Im hoping some of you will have one of these.
I've been researching up on this bike ie reviews as I love it but want to know what to expect for when I buy one.
Basically, I'm looking for any tips on maintanence, reliability - how is it I've heard problems include carb icing, gearbox, cam chains, cranks, sticky chokes and rusting fasteners, I'm also aware the suspension needs attention in higher mileage machines and the calipers need very regular cleaning and maintenance.
Are there any other bad points o good points you could share I'd be very grateful.
I'm preparing in advance as to when I can legally get the bike, and are the above disadvantages really common, have you had them? Is there a proper way of checking on purchase, or a pure gamble?
Lastly, I thought all srads (96-00) were the same, but I have heard from mcn, that from 98' onwards (yr I was thinking of buying, duno why) have had an overhaul meaning engine was toned down, with more midrange power...which is best of any 97, or 98? Is the 97 better as its faster or not?
Some people claim 160mph but other (mcn)review, say 150mph im guessing real speeds!
Thanks a hell of alot in advance!

I swear I read a post just like that on gixer junkies.
I haven't really worked on my bike yet so don't know what to look out for although I understand that the CCT should be replaced at regular intervals (indicated by a rattle, which, coincidentally, my bike is making).
In all honesty, you could try the ninja as well and probably the cbr of similar ages. My 97 srad feels faster than my 00' zx6r did but I guess I could be wrong. Both were great bikes though.
150mph is probably closer to the truth, they aren't exactly light. |

Well I own a 1999 SRAD import.
I bloody love it, but since its my first bike I can't really compare it to anything.
I have had no real problems with it - I do think I get the carb icing from time to time on a long run in the winter, but not a serious problem. The import has a heated carbs (I think ) to help prevent this.
I have changed the Cam Chain Tensioner for a APE manual one, which has stopped the noisy top end rattle. The bike itself has done 15k, which I guess is not too much really.
Finish is a bit poor - my fork fronts have bubbled a bit, but again this is fairly common from what I've heard.
As a bike, it is quality in the corners and blasting about, I have had no problem keeping up with modern bikes on the track etc, so the performance is definitely there. I much preferred it to the R6 cup bike I had to hire for a trackday when I'd dropped the Gixxer it just feels so much more solid&planted than that did.
It can be a pain on the wrists when commuting, and agony on long journeys due to aggressive peg positioning, but then again its a sportsbike, what do you expect!!
As far a speed goes, I have seen 160 indicated a couple of times, and still climbing (slowly), so I reckon 150 in reality is what you get!
One last thing, they sound absolutely amazing with a straight through pipe & the crazy induction raor. Like hells own sportsbike
Get one, for the money they are fantastic! |
