If you hold a car licence issued before February 1 2001 you are legally entitled to ride a 50cc motorcycle without L-Plates and you make take a passenger. You must not ride on a motorway.

Was wondering because if that was true, when my dad doesn't have his car (service ect.) he could take me on the back, not too bad 2 up hits 45 on the flat on car speedos, then I could ride the bike back to my house and then do the same when he needs picking up.

Also, would it matter if he rode it with L plates even though he doesn't need them? So I would't have to take them off then put them back on when I am riding it.

Cheers,

M

Yes - https://www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk/advice/motorcycling02.htm

Full car licence

If you passed a car test before 1 February 2001, you are automatically entitled to ride a moped without L-plates and without taking CBT (although it is recommended that you do take the course). If you passed a car test on or after that date, you will still receive full moped entitlement but will need to complete CBT before riding on the road. The CBT certificate issued to you is then valid for the duration of your car driving licence while riding a moped only

Technically he shouldn't ride with L-plates. When my dad rides my scooter he just takes a coupe of pieces of paper and sticks it over.

Also technically your dad can't ride it because it's not a moped Wink

If I am reading too deeply into this then forget it Laughing

But why is it not a moped?

A moped is not just defined by the capacity (50cc) it's also defined by the speed restriction, that is 31mph max: DSA - Information for Moped Riders. As you've already stated your 50cc is capable of 45mph, this would mean your dad's licence entitlement does not cover this particular bike; and if you're not 17 it's not covered by yours either. Mr. Green

Not sure about the L's. I dont think it really matters, You cant show L's on amotorway, Youll give someone a heart attack when you go past him. sould be a luagh though.

But generally...I think if you cant be assed to take them off then it doesnt matter, it will as I said just draw attention to it and give the police a reason to check you out, Pillion with L's...youll get pulled by EVERY copper who sees it.

Yeh don't want to get pulled by traffic coppers but they probally pull us anyway if they were behind because if they have a clue they will pull us anyways because its a 50.

You should cover the L plates up because you are displaying that your dad is a learner when he isn't. Police don't just pull you up because you're on a 50, they pull you up for a reason. I've never been pulled up.
