Bugger
Was going through Bexleyheath and turned a corner...hit a big long spillage of oil or diesel and the front just dropped away. Felt like the back was still gripping and overtook the front and threw me up the road - flying forwards like superman!! right side of the bike is all scratched, bobbin bent right back, can is scratched on either end. Landed mostly on my right thigh - luckily or unluckily my phone was in that pocket and took the brunt of the hit. Tore my jeans open (i know, i know - was only going for short ride and see what happens) and scratched my phone too. Just have a big bruise on my thigh and it hurts a little. Other than that, my left glove was cut open on the palm a bit but not through to the skin.
I came out of it quite well really! Wasn't going fast, maybe 15-20mph but still gave me a right shock!
Had a look at the corner again and it's now covered in sand....no safer at all in my opinion!!...maybe it's visible now

Few people stopped to check I was OK - thanks whoever you guys were. Forgot to ask names as I didn't know my arse from my elbow at the time despite not hitting my head at all!!
All I was worried about was why I couldn't get my bike out of gear, haha

Bike seems to be running fine....took a while to get it to start again.
Called the police and they said to put in a claim against the highway agency/council for repairs.
Rode the bike home - a few miles and it seems OK...dropped into a garage I know on the way home (Aye Gee, Welling) and the mechanic reckons it's only all cosmetic damage - phew!!
Have a few pics I'll put up once I get back from the police station to fill in some forms!

Do I call my insurance company asap or deal directly with the council?

Unlucky, may just have to chalk it up to experience, learn from it and move on I'm afraid.

Unless the spill was reported earlier in the day you have little hope of claiming against the council.

Take pictures of the sand and spillage to back your claim up.

Here's some photo's I took:
First few are of the road after the sand was put down....you can see the corner I took through the traffic lights (first pic) and binned it on the way out of the corner. Ended up a few meters up the road on my stomach. Leather jacket has some nice scuff marks now!!

it was about 3.30 to 4 so loads of school chavs about!

surprisingly didn't get too much attention though
a couple of lads from the pup opposite came over to help
one called the cops to report the oil I think as when I went back to get photo's there was sand everywhere

starting to ache now but nothing too serious that I can tell

that bobbin definitely did a good job - how the hell I'm going to wrench it back straight to get it off I've no idea though!!

haha...my head still ain't working right!
to be honest I thought the damage isn't too bad but then maybe the colour of the bike helps hide it a bit

off out to have a go at straightening it now!

I feel sorry for you mate, i work up the road at the local bus garage and if you want some advice get in contact with them as-well as Selkent in Plumstead and Bromly and Ariva in Dartford.

All of our buses are crap and its a good chance it came from them, if they knew about a spillage from one of their vehicles they have a responsibility to clean it up.

Glad you weren't hurt mate with so much "street furniture" on London Roads you're lucky you didn't get wrapped round a "mind the signs" sign

You know, if the damage is only cosmetic you should leave it, bike scars will give it personality!

If you didn't have that crash bung on you would now have 100's of pieces of plastic instead of a fairing with a scratch on it, so I'd say it did a damned good job actually!

Is that all they did about the stuff on the road? I remember not so long back there was a long line of diesel from a lorry with its cap hanging off going through Harrogate and they got the fire Brigade out and washed it away with their mega powerful hoses! Was gone within about 2 hours from when I passed it as I came by again. It was quite bad though, I was in a van and accelerating made the wheels spin up (70bhp tops).

how are you meant to get the bung out? Confused

looks like if you breathe on it, it'll shear off!

I'm inclined to agree with the above.

Only time I think a crash bung comes in use is for a simple drop at low speed, but even then I'd probably want to replace the crash bung as it'll have scratch marks on it!

nah, had a go at it last night and it's solid!

I'll take the fairing off and then have another go. might get lucky and it'll screw out

Really not. Out of all of my low sides/drops, I've never smashed a fairing -- and even if it did, I'd rather replace a panel than having a bent frame due to a rubbish crash bung.

If the bung has bent (as it is designed to) then it more than likely won't have bent the frame. My dad's bike (ZX9R) fell off the sidestand in the wind and the fairing got a massive crack down it so a crash at speed would surely be worse?
