just some pics.. already dropped her, steep gravel drive.. went to drop down to 1st and as soon as I pulled the clutch lever and cut the power to wheel, even for a split second, she slipped on the gravel and went down Sad

Enjoy it mate.

I remember when I got my first bike - wheeled it out of the garage and parked it with its nose pointing down the camber on the road. Cue it falling off the side stand.

Very first time I took it out. Sod's law.

lol, yeah..

no serious damage anyway, scratched the exhaust a bit and scratched the plastics on the tail as it got caught in my gate..

most annoying part was that I had just driven over from the petrol station.. sitting watching my petrol slowly leaking out while waiting for my dad to come help me lift it..

(I managed to pick her up on my own to a degree, but because the tail was stuck in the gate every time I tried it just made it worse.. needed someone to ease the tail out of the gate while I lifted)

They are great first big bikes, got the same except mine has the (gay) bikini fairing in grey. Did you do das or a2? Mines restricted but it feels no different at all from when it was full power, apart from about 15mph off top end.
Enjoy it Thumbs Up

A2, yeah restricted..

even restricted I scared myself when I first rode it.. much faster than the 125 I had before..

I rode away from the garage just like I would've ridden my 125, felt like I was going to take off lol..

rode it from my home address to my uni address today (EDIT: it's not 100ish miles actually, it's 84.1 Laughing)..

it's actually pretty tiring without a fairing, so don't complain.. Next step for me is getting a screen.. no money at all just now though, not even enouh to fill my tank :/

To be honest the fairing is rubbish IMO. All it does is re direct the wind onto your head and shoulders.
Yea when I first pulled away, I pulled off how I would on my 50. 6k pulling away, throttle response is so sensitive compared to my 50.
Thumbs Up

Lovely looking bike, looks like something i'd love to own in the future.

Sorry to be off topic, but what exactly is a 'fairing'??

I thought it was the protective plastic body that covers the engine on both sides of the bike. but now im confused thinking its something to rediret wind??

Sorry, im very new to bikes!

Great first big bike. I had a KLR600 before my XJ but then I fancied a roadbike so I got the XJ. I did 30,000 miles on it in 2 years and it taught me loads about biking. I had some great times on it and some not so great times on it but overall it's been a fantastic bike. I've bought the ZRX not so long ago so the XJ has been de-moted to work hack (when I fix it up!) but I have no worries about it running for another 30,000 miles!

yeah, pretty much, but it's not really there to protect the engine, it's there to deflect the wind around the rider, makes riding at highish speeds more comfortable..

it's also to help with aerodynamics, pushes the top end up a few mph I guess..

KLR600, why does your XJ600 only have 1 disc on the front wheel?

and nice pic btw, very nice

I also have a black caberg incidentally, without the stripes Razz

Earlier models had a single disc, later had twin. Mines got 50k on the clock, 9 are mine, has it since start of march. They are ultra reliable bikes not had 1 prob with mine, apart from running out of front brake pads Embarassed
Mines starting to burn oil now but I reckon it will do another 30k at least. Not bad for 450 quid.
Oh and avoid Avon Roadriders like the plague, utter shite.
Learn to ride them right and you can embaress sports bike riders. Doing a trackday on mine on the 5th june.

fair enough.. I paid £850 for that one.. you think that's reasonable? it seems like it's been well looked after to me, generally anyway, small cosmetic things here and there, but it is 9 years old..

and how do you know when a bike is burning oil btw?

Avon roadriders? tyres?

Well mines a 1996, had 41k on it. So yours is 3 years newer than mine, I'm guessing less miles. So yea its a good deal either way.
Oil, generally needing to top the oil up. In theory it should only burn a small amount. I wouldn't worry about it for a while. Plus I redline mine a lot which doesn't help.
Yes roadriders are tyres, not very grippy in the dry, shocking in the wet. If I wasnt so cheap I would change them for dunlop arrowmax's which I had before, grippy as hell. You can also fit a 140 rear tyre on the back instead of the 130.

yeah, mileage is in the bottom pic, 28k..

I should have checked the oil, that's a good point.. he did say oil and filter were changed recently though.. so hopefully that's alright..

I have absolutely no money just now at all.. so the tyres that are on it are staying on it lol

handling felt a bit weird but I put it down to being such a different bike to my cbr125.. meant to check tyre pressures before I rode up here, but forgot..

oh well, was a nice ride anyway, good weather, dry, not hot, not cold..

also got stuck behind a car doing 45-50 and actually realised that that was the most enjoyable part of the ride, much more relaxed than fighting the wind at 75ish..

yeah, went to look at 4 bikes..

one of them was a cbr400 with 140,000km on the clock lol, didn't realise the mileage when I arranged to view, he wanted £1200 for it :O

a deauville that had had an engine transplant, (was very good cosmetically, and the new engine only had 8000 miles on it), but just at the very outer limits of my budget..

vfr400, £1000, very tatty, the throttle actually stuck when I used it, I had to twist it back lol..

this for £850, went and looked at it, sixth sense said it was good, my friend (who knows more about bikes than me) confirmed, told me the asking price was good, not to bother haggling, just offer the asking price and secure the bike..

am happy I did Very Happy

Out of those, you probably made the right choice. For your budget you could of found a better bike, but people ask silly money for 400's. That and just wanting to get on the road.
Deuville = old mans bike Very Happy

yeah, I know it's an old mans bike, but would've been ideal for what I wanted..

100 miles and back every weekend..

shaft drive + fairing + v-twin + luggage..

I would've put up with the looks for the practicality..

too expensive though..

As Steve-D said, older models were single disc. They changed to double front disc in 1998.

If you keep on top of general maintenance, stuff like checking oil levels, brake pads, lubing stuff that needs to be lubed and going over the electrical connectors every now and again with contact cleaner it will go on forever. I haven't really been very clever with mine maintenance wise which would explain why I'm currently trying to rebuild the clutch but bear in mind I've only changed the oil twice in 30k miles and the oil filter just the one time.....!

I think you got it for an ok price, I paid £1500 for mine but it was in mint condition with 3k miles on it.

I've only ever been able to fit Bridgestone BT-45's on mine as that's all my local(ish) tyre place stocks in that size. I find them a pretty good compromise between grip and longevity although it isn't really the bike for kneedowns etc. They're ok in the wet too.

thanks Smile

and on that topic, if you look at the pic of the right hand side of my bike you will see a white thing stuck to the rear tyre.. that is a reflective strip, stuck on by the previous owner..

if you then look at the tasty chicken strips on the picture taken from behind the bike.. you'll see that it's stuck right round onto the tread..

assuming I lean that far at some point, will it actually affect the feel in any way? I can't imagine something that small would, but it just seems a little strange to me Confused

another question, because it is restricted I was having trouble getting it to go above 80, (I think it's the windblast+restriction).. I don't mind that at all, but it does mean that I really can't lean much round corners or I oversteer Razz

so is there a way I can take a better line to get more satisfaction out of the corners? or do I need to find some better roads?

Thanks,

Rode the same journey the other way today.. took it a bit easier, and was much more relaxing, was good fun on the way up too, but for different reasons Wink

could someone post a link to the divvy owners forum please?

other question is, how do I check the oil? I went to check today, unscrewed what I though was the dipstick, turns out there's no dipstick on it.. so I'm assuming that's where you top up and there's a reservoir somewhere? can anyone point me to it?

Thanks,

There's a sightglass to check the oil level. Make sure the bike is level when you check the oil level though.
