Bit of a geeky random thread.

I was more than happy with my tarrif, that was until I heard about Shauns 02 and the fact that I can only get 100kb of internet in my allowance per month. This means that to even just access the net I almost certainly go over my limits and I might as well forget trying to surf!

I did notice that when I was trying to fart ass around with some downloads for the phone the kb data in the top corner of the page was consistently reading 0kb as I was using an unsecured wireless network.

Is this correct?

Does WLAN mean that you can surf well outside of your monthly allowance?

As regards to a phones contract, once its started can you go and haggle with the number of texts and minutes etc depending on what you have used to suit your needs or is it cancel the existing one and start again?

Your allowance covers data transfered over the phone network.

Wireless is free yes (dependant on hot spot charges)

You can't haggle until the end of your contract when it's time to renew, you get much better deals than a new customer these days.

I believe you can surf on a Wlan for free since essentially you're not making a call.

I have taken out insurance cover on the phone that (in theory) also allows me to break or renew my 18 month contract after 9 months. I must admit that it was the 1st time that I've had a pay monthly contract so was a little too quick to say 'I want that one'.

You'll never get a deal anywhere near what I got as a new customer, you pretty much have to suffer the normal rates in the first 12/18 months then bring your costs down when it's renewal time.

As others have said, you won't get charged for using WLAN to surf - the charges only apply to GRPS data transfer.

Slight hijack , but what is a good comparatively cheap (since if its more than £100 I might as well buy an Asus EEPC) , phone that is capable of WIFI connections?.

I used Wifi very well in ASIA as it is everywhere even out in the sticks (as they stick them in lampposts), but had to lug around a fairly hefty notebook all round Asia. ($25 for unlimited for a month).

As long as it has a keyboard instead of a mobile keypad it should be good for it. Although in total honesty I'd prefer to use an eeepc than a phone for websurfing, if you are just checking emails a phone can do that well but web browsing isn't so fun really.
