This has sort of been covered before, but my question is slightly more specific.

I've just got a new job and a 60 mile commute (each way) to go with it. Now my shirt must look smart when I arrive.

I don't wear a suit, so the jacket isn't a problem.

I wear textiles, I currently have a set of the Aldi ones, which are great so far!

But does anyone do it? Day in day out? Am I kidding myself?
There's no option of getting these special non-iron M&S ones. The shirts are provided by the company.

So can it be done? Wake up, look smart, put your textiles on, ride 60 miles, take textiles off and still look smart?

I'd just fold the shirt up and put it in a backpack..

If just getting changed at work is not an option,

If you are anything like me i sweat under textiles, so a shirt would end up with sweat patches etc...

Yeah I must say I worry about sweating. The onus during training is looking smart in uniform. So it really is paramount.

The drawback is, I'm already riding for an hour and a bit to get to work, having to arrive early regularly to get changed into my shirt will be a PITA.

I have a top box too, so I have plenty of storage. But I will have to keep footwear etc in there too.

I wear a shirt everyday and commute in everyday too, wearing either a light jacket, textile top or a jumper (when it's sunny). I have no problems.

Perhaps you don't want to be wearing the type of shirt that shows up creases that well (is it the material or washing product? No idea...)

Fuck me what a decision. How long does it take to put a shirt on?

Short answer, you'll sweat, shirt will look like shit, put it in the topbox and change into it...jeez.

You clearly don't have to do it everyday. But I think I will take it in the top box and change into it.

Yes, but you don't seem to appreciate how much of a pain in the arse it'll be. But I'll do, because I love you.

In winter if it rains uber heavily your shirt gets damp, in summer you sweat.

I always got there 5 mins early to put my shirt on in the toilet when I was in an office. I folded my shirt in to my tankbag the night before.

I have to change every morning in a grotty school toilet.

There's no shower near where I work - and using the pupils' ain't really an option.

It's a bind.

What you could do would be wear one shirt and take a spare. That way if you stink, or if the shirt is ruined by the journey, you've got an emergency in your top box. but given a 60 mile journey, II wouldn't put much faith in looking terribly presentable when you arrive!

Once you get into the habit, you'll find it doesn't take too much extra hassle to get changed at work.

Always remember, though, never sacrifice safety for convenience! You'll be forgiven for the odd crumpled shirt but you'll only be forgotten (within the month) if you end up under a truck with little gear on!

I found a thread on youTube on how to fold shirts Laughing (Some people have waaaayy too much time).

It's like they come in packets. So I'm hoping that'll keep them looking presentable in the top box.

Maybe I'll mod the GS and fit a full size wardrobe inc changing room on the back.

I always used to get changed at work - allowing 10 extra minutes is hardly a hateful drag, and it encouraged me to wear decent protective gear regardless of the weather - a quick Submariner's Shower at work would solve any sweaty problems as long as I had fresh uniform to change into.

Loosely rolling up an ironed shirt and carrying it in a topbox or rucksack is the way ahead.

I do it every day without fail, wear a nice clean shirt with tie underneath my leather or textile jacket, I put my trousers in my tank bag and change into these when i get to work.

I never have a problem with creases when wearing either a leather or textile jacket over the top although they are not skin tight.

If you prefer to put them in a tank bag or back pack, find a one that has rigid sides so your gear doesnt get creased under the weight of the bag

Having said all that, my commute is only 12 miles,. if i was doing 50 each way then i would put all my gear in a tank bag and get changed at work, its not too much of a bind once you get into the routine of it.

Why ??
Hardly takes a long time to put a shirt on.
Riding for that length of time should already have a built in 15 min excess incase of any traffic problems....
And if its a new one i would make sure i was there 30 mins before start time, to give the right impression... Won't look good if your excuse for being late is i was stuck in traffic on my bike Laughing

I always give myself double the amount of time needed to get to work. I would rather sit at my desk supping a couple of cups of coffee, than arrive at the last min and be rushing around to get ready.
So i set of between 6:45 & 7:00 for a 8:00 start and its only a 30 min commute on a good day. And if its looking like i might be there even earlier, a short detour is in order Thumbs Up

I'd wear one of those Draggin' Jeans jacket things over the shirt. It shouldn't crease it, you won't be sweating and if you do have an off at least you've got abrasive properties similar to leather.

I think they do a waterproof version of the jackets too... and you could top if off with the velcro armor stuff - you'll look like a right rebel but it'll serve the purpose!

I think the shirt will probably be ok under my textile Jacket.

But on the first day I'll probably change into it, just so I make the right impression.

I guess it's a try it and see sort of thing. If it was a shorter commute I'd probably just lob my jacket over it with no problems.

to be honest your not going to lose that much time changing at work as now you can get up get showered etc.. then instead of carefully putting on your shirt and your textiles over the top carefully as not to crease it you can now just slam a t-shirt on and throw on a jacket and race off.

get to work chuck off your stuff and then get a shirt on. you will lose a couple of minutes tops with the changing there as you will have gained a couple of minutes at home.

done!

I have a top box for the work office clobber.

Arrive, get changed in the Gents. However I am not known for my use of an Iron.

It is a kaffuffle. but I have found out my Jacket and my boots are not as waterproof as I would like and had to spend the whole day a bit damp. So it is worth having something you can guarantee will be presentable the other side.

I just don't bother looking as smart, If you are customer facing I dont see the point I'll wear combats and a shirt with rolled up sleeves, that is usually faily creased. Obviously just starting out you dont wanna do this, I used to leave trousers at work and wear my shirt under leathers.

That's one thing I'll miss about my old job, wander in in jeans and t-shirt. I used to sit at my desk in my bike boots most days.

Sadly not an option here. Uniform must be immaculate, no choice in that.

I hate that, I mostly work nights so I wear what I want if they put me on days I will be the scruffiest in there, I dont se the point I think I look more untidy when I wear smart clobber anyway, I'm not a smart person.

I have to wear a nurses uniform.

I leave my trousers and shoes in my locker and then commute in either Draggin jeans or leathers.

Tunic? I can't leave this in my uniform as need a new one each shift so when its really hot just commute in a T shirt and put it in the tank bag.

I was like you about the time needed to change.

I can get out of my leathers and into my uniform in less than 5 minutes, in a shared locker room with nowhere to put anything. If the door opens, I just pray that I have my trousers on and not round my ankles.

Even in the winter when I commuted in my uniform under my textiles, it wasn't that badly creased if at all. Remember that if you drive to work in a car the shirt still gets creased up.
