i lieu of a better answer from a better qualified person, in the meantime i'll have a go

i had this on my bandit. the main thing was that the steering gets more "jittery" as theres nothing hodling it tight. so bumps and stuff move the steering rather than all the shock being taken by the suspension in the forks.

you can check it by getting the bike on its stand(centre) and rear wheel. if you grab the forks and can move them back and forth then thats a bad sign (dont do it below the fork seals-that could just indicate they are dodge)

apparently you can adjust them, but when mine went it was so bad they had to be replaced.

the bike feels a lot better now they have been done.

anyways, hopefully someone will come along and put that into to sensible mechanic language

apart from fuck loads of understeer, I've discovered that shagged headstock bearings have the ability to make your pants turn brown.

worst case l had was the lower headstock bearing breaking up and seizing the steering while in sweden due to rust, removed what was left of the bearing and left the outer shell in place (so not to cause wear to the seat) while l rode 150 miles to finland to get a new one, bloody awful riding a bike that jolts forwards and back every time you brake/accelerate from the access movement.
