Hi

Just had a week off work. On my return to work my background on my laptop had been changed from a piccy of my bike to a plain grey background (no biggy) but also websites such as Facebook, Hotmail, BCF, basically everything that I'd go on before work or on my lunch, have been blocked. No-one elses computers are like this, because I've seen people on hotmail/messenger neither of which I can have.

It's a small company with one in particular IT guy who is moving to France soon therefore leaving the job.

Not really enjoying the job anyway, but do a fair amount of work, and would be missed if I left.

What to do? Have a word? Leave it until said IT guy goes?

Ta

Personally I'd have a word, as others appear to have privileges but you don't it could be personal, it could be the I.T. support guy is an arse. However, you could be opening a can o'worms here, use of e-mail, internet and the like is at your employers discretion. If you push it they could withdraw everyone's access or monitor everything and implement a policy and that's the last thing you want. A lot of companies have corporate outlines for wallpaper and screen-savers etc... so before you do ask check to see if your contract of employment or employees handbook mentions it.

Have a word and ask why things have changed.

Maybe they have tracked some stuff back.

I don't know what sort of data you carry on the laptop, but if its got any company details of clients or such then programs like messenger etc are a security risk.

The company has to have a policy of what and what you are not allowed to do with their equipment and what internet access they allow

I have no doubt in that it is a personal matter. The IT guy has never liked me, not alot I can do about that, I'm always pleasant.

Everyone has their own background. Nothing strange about that. It wasn't offensive, it's my bike FFS.

No doubt he has checked my history online etc. When I joined the company HE told me that no websites were banned etc because he did not like that working atmosphere. I could understand it if I had hotmail running 24.7 on a seperate window, but it was literally once in the morning (before work - I used to arrive early, not anymore Laughing ) on my lunch break and then right at the end of the day.

I'd hardly consider that to be excessive.

At the end of the day he is leaving soon, and more fool him, because as he checks my history again he will soon find out that he neglected to block fish4jobs and Monster.

Surprise, cockface!

Maybe but we are often the most powerful which can lead to network admins going on power trips which seems like the case here.

The IT geek is being a prick and is sitting back laughing probably to see how long it takes to to bring up the matter while everyone around you surfs the web. Is there a way you can unblock it yourself? I guess you would if you could though but if you did or could get it ublocked that would be great as then he cant really come back and say something when everyone else is at it.

be sneaky here and careful. play dumb if you have to, Wink

USB pen drive browser?

https://www.opera-usb.com/index.htm

Or if you're being particularly sneaky, an entire, DVD/USB bootable operating system that runs on the RAM.

Or there's a portable firefox. At v3 but 2.0.0.15 is available from the download site.

However, change of browser maybe not work if filtering done by server/firewall.

Or do what I do, remotely access your home PC via something like VNC and surf from your own machine at home in a window. Razz That way, you aren't technically using their connection to access these sites. Good for that lunch time pr0n fix...

Depends on the company, I know a lot of bigger companies where IT is quite an important and relied on department. Especially these days with most things being technology related. Wink

GARTH:

Almost guaranteed some twunt has remoted into your PC and changed the 'hosts' file.

Go to 'run'.

Type 'drivers'

In the folder that opens will be a folder called 'etc'. Open this. Open the file that is called 'hosts' in Notepad (it has no file extension, so it won't be hosts.txt or anything - just hosts).

it should loke something like this:
Quote:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

If it has any other hostnames which aren't commented out then it is likely that this is the problem. Simply put a # at the beginning of each line that contains a blocked website.

Thusly:
Quote:

If that doesn't fix it then he's done something screwy with the firewall/dns server that you might not be able to sort. In that case I would complain about victimisation to the management. Make sure you point out that you've read the IT policy and you only visit the sites in question in your lunchbreak/after work (whatever it says is acceptable in your IT policy).

HTH.

People have outlined the ways to do it,

Proxy - although i dont think that used to work with onlineMSN.

USB browser - worked a treat when we had a built in school blocker

Another thing i did was got a mates username and password when they locked me off and used there's they never found out about that, not sure if your system makes you login but its a possibility i suppose.
