My next bike is looking like being a Triumph Tiger 1050. And i'd like to hear from people who have owned them, and still own them. What are the things to look out for when buying. Looking at getting a newish one with full panniers for a little bit of touring.

Hi. THat is a good forum.

I used to have a Tiger 1050 before my previous bike (GSXR1000K8), currently have a BMW K1300S. The Tiger was a good all rounder but I found that the gears were a bit clunky (GSXR was v smooth, BMW better than the Tiger but worse than the GSXR). The OEM top box was rubbish, a top box will make the back of the bike (which is already quite high) very high. Also the lock / catch mechanism was awful, failed after a couple of months by popping open at random moments when being carried off the bike, resulting in all contents spilling out all over the place.

If you have the centre stand it is easily grounded on roundabouts. Also it's not that stable at 120+ as I found out when in Germany, but if you rarely push it up to these speeds it's fine. Quite brisk acceleration but you will not keep up with sportier bikes. Good view of the road but get the mirror extenders to improve rear vision (the mirrors will still vibrate though).

If you don't ride every couple of days through the winter get a battery tender. I found that the OEM battery did not hold its charge very well if left for a couple of weeks in cold weather.

Other than the above, it was a good bike but I found it a bit boring after a while. In hindsight the Sprint would have been a better option for me but if you are after a sit up large bike it's ok.

Thumbs Up

Took one for a very long extended test ride.

Thought it was fantastic, fast enough, pretty comfortable and sounded stunning! Looks great in orange Wink

Throttle was fine around town, no jumping or twitchy behaviour.

Front suspension was a little soft for me, but I wasn't going to fiddle with a test bike Thumbs Up

Did about 800 miles over two consecutive days on one a while back. Very comfortable, good handling mostly and a great engine.

Same as above though, the bike started to develop what can only be termed as a "death wobble" at 120-130mph. Which was a bit disconcerting...

I do love the 1050 in mine; can't get enough of just topping it out in second and letting it run down the revs popping and banging to itself like a thing alive Laughing

No need Very Happy

I've had my tiger just over a year and I've done over 13k miles on it. I love my tiger. There is nothing on the market, for any price, that I would trade it for.
I will take any opportunity to ride it (hence the mileage).

Good points-
The engine - smooth and torquey, perfect combo. Revs freely to about 10k. I cant see me ever going away from triples now.
Riding position - so comfortable. I'll happily ride all day. The only issue is wind noise/turbulance but this is a very personal issue to do with the combo of screen & helmet. I found the stock screen crap but some ppl like it.
Tank range - I get 180 miles out of it commuting, sitting at 80/90mph on mway I get 200, and the most Ive got is 230 (sticking on fast a roads).
Handling - yes the suspension is soft compared to sports bike, obviously. But once your used to it you can actually throw it around pretty well. People take them on track days and do ok on them.
The noise (now I have swapped the exhaust) - lovely throaty growl, does sound like a tiger! Very Happy

Bad points (although theyre not that bad)
Luggage - OEM luggage looks pretty good but in terms of storage size is pretty crap. Left side is 24l and the right is 19l (due to the cut out for the next bad point). I dont have the OEM topbox so cant comment. I am currently saving up for some SW Motech Trax panniers (metal top loading box ones) which are either 37l or 45l each
OEM Exhaust - I know theyre pretty crap on all bikes but the one on the tiger is huge, ugly, eats into pannier space and sounds like a sowing machine. I have a Remus Powercone, makes the thing sound awesome and because its lower and shorter it makes space for my planned bigger panniers.
OEM screen - for me it was crap. I got a big one on a Palmer bracket (guy on tiger1050.com makes and sells them). Is like a barn door but keeps all wind off me and allows me to ride all day.

To summarise - I love my tiger and will be keeping it for a long time to come, but only after making a few mods and making it my own. I cant wait til the next time I get to ride it (tomorrow morning to work Very Happy )

Any other questions feel free to pm me.

Buy one, buy one now!

*sorry for the long post but I really am passionate about this bike Embarassed

I've never had that big an issue with the standard lighting. I guess its what your used to, and i came from an sv, with even worse lighting. You get get hid kits or aux spot lights and stuff if you really need to.

No issue with lighting (although HID would be an improvement) just hate bikes with two headlights where only one is on - looks broken.
