But for some reason or another i never ever listened to any Iron Maiden. A mate lent me 'The best of the beast' album last week, and i cant stop listening to it! Why the fluck did i wait till now to discover them?? Totally awesome!! |

Probably because they started gigging well before you were born?
So shall we do the old old argument, who is the best Maiden singer?
Technically Bruce but I prefer the Dianno stuff cos I always thought Bruce was just playing at being a singer in a band, it was never really part of him like it was for the rest of them.
But I am old, and smell of wee, and first saw Maiden in 1979 so my opinion probbaly doesn't count! ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

I once had to fence against Bruce Dickinson in a tournament, only he didn't show up.

How mad is this :
I am not sure I even know one Iron Maiden song.
I like head-banging, and I have no doubt there is Iron Maiden stuff which I know, but I just don't know its them.
Obviously I'm not an aficionado ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

I grew up with Maiden being played by my older brothers, I like 'em. Alas, I don't play them much anymore, I'm more into newer metal - Killswitch is playing as we speak. Jesse or Howard...
I've lost track of maiden singers...

OMG I feel so old
I was into Maiden in my youth (about 28 years ago), when I used to go to the Floral Hall in Southport & Maxim's in Wigan for rock nights every week. ____________________ Enjoy everyday, tell those you love everyday you love them

Its not really that they started up before i was born, ive been into Black Sabbath, Hendrix, even really old blues stuff like Robert Johnson for a long time now, i just never listened to any of there stuff
Babyam, interestingly the year you first saw 'Maiden was the year i went from being a twinkle in someones eye to a living breathing screaming shit machine - you can keep your korns, linkin park and good charlottes, its the old stuff where its at |

Its nice to hear some of the people who go "Yeah, of course Maiden are great - Edward The Great/The Best Of The Beast are great albums!"
Its amusing as they are both effectively greatest hits compilations!
The best album for me is probably Powerslave, followed closely by The Number Of The Beast, and then possibly Killers or Iron Maiden.
As for singer, I would probably describe myself as more of a Bruce Dickinson fan than a Maiden fan (although I detest the term 'fan'). I like the Paul DiAnnio stuff, but I can't help but think it might sound better with Bruce singing. I've got a bootleg MP3 of Bruce singing the song 'killers' and the screaming bits sound sooo much better when Bruce does it.
Someone mentioned Fear Of The Dark. A pretty awful album as Maiden albums go, and the studio version of the song itself isn't very good. It really comes alive when sung live of course, much like many of the more 'mediocre' maiden stuff.
The tracks that I listen to the least when listening to the studio albums are actually the ones I enjoy the most when seeing them live. For example, Can I Play With Madness? And I just can't get on with Run To The Hills. Sounds a bit too comedy for my liking I think.
If you're new to Maiden, and don't want to buy the whole shebang, I would suggest buying The Number Of The Beast, Iron Maiden and Brave New World albums. That covers all of the stuff that I think is good. You've got some early stuff, some early Bruce stuff, and some of the best 'Bruce returns' stuff.
I don't own any of the Blaze Bayley stuff, and I don't think I want to. But If I was advising someone who was getting into maiden, I'd probably suggest not buying Fear Of The Dark or No Prayer For The Dying. They are the weakest albums IMO, and only contain one or two tracks each. The rest of the tracks are some what of a acquired taste! ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

Alright, possibly I know Run to the Hills
But I didnt know that was whose song it was.
Thanks for those links, Phil, I shall go and listen to them later on, and improve my seriously-lacking musical knowledge. I'm so ignorant of these things, its incomprehensible to imagine such a scenario. People are always shocked when I have no idea who sings what songs, me being so old and ev'ting
I'm sure the No. 1 Chaperone said once that he was mates with one of them, but I can't remember whether it was one of them, or Motorhead (no, possibly not, actually: that was someone else I know who is old mates with Lemmy) ... shows how unimpressed/ignorant of such things I can be ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Ditto, I think.
I've spent many years listening to Queen, Hendrix and Status Quo, cos a mate of mine took me to a Quo concert in Auckland when I was 17; and Hendrix because he was an influence of Queen, who I had listened to since I was about 13 and madly in love with Freddie Mercury, no matter how bent he was.
I used to be a bit of a rebel and listen to the late night DJs, rather than all the popular stuff, so I knew about the likes of Sabbath and that, but never really got majorly into it.
A lot of my early influences were kind of hippyish surfer soft-rock-American 70s stuff ... JJ Cale, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Warren Zevon, etc., cos that was what people had on their car radios during the daytime at the beach.
But I got a lot of the British stuff mixed in from my late night forays into radio whilst desperately trying to catch up on my homework ... so I tended to miss out a lot of proper head-banging stuff til I was older, and by then I seemed to have acquired a more eclectic interest in different sorts of music, and wasn't bothered about following metal so devotedly. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

<sales patter>
The new Maiden 'best of' is out next month btw.
https://www.ironmaiden.com/images/news/webversion.jpg
And tickets are still available for their only UK gig this year @ Twickenham Stadium. With a giant pyramid, walking cyborg and shitloads of pyro (the full show didn't fit in the plane for the first leg, but we'll be getting the whole shebang )
