Am I right in thinking that the disc locks with the circular type locks are still to be avoided?
I remember something about Oxford having problems with them and being able to be opened with a biro/pen.

I'm thinking of getting a disc lock with an alarm, like the Xena. Trouble is I see they have this type of lock.

See here for The Fast One and here for Maplins version.

So can anyone recommend one?

FWIW will be used on a 50cc scooter with front disc, so size, as they say, is important Very Happy
So, say, will this one do (clicky)?

Thumbs Up

I would recommend this! Should fit your scooter, it isn't insurance approved, but it is a good lock in my experience. Thumbs Up

Not much help for you, but I got one of the Aldi ones. Sadly it does have one of the circular type locks which are vulnerable to being opened with a Biro.

But on the subject of alarmed disk locks. They're very good. Mine doesn't go off with the wind, but is easily as sensative and as loud as the Datatool alarm I had.

At work we use Ken locks for the laptops we issue, these have the circular locks and if you chew on the end of a Biro for a bit to soften it, as long as its the right size you can push it in and unlock it. Though these are cheap locks, i don't know if it can be done on half decent ones.

Oxford alarmed disk lock is ruddish, takes about 10 watch batteries and doesn't last a month!

There was a massive issue about pretty much all disklocks with that type of lock were vulnerable.

Most manufacturers offered to replace all locks with one of a different type.

That's why nearly all new locks have those pillar type keys with lazer cut notches.

Dont bother with the maplins one, mine got thrown in the corner of the garden never to be used again. I mean, why make a disk lock that sets itself off when it gets wet? Evil or Very Mad

Cheers

stinkwheel Well I just had my hands up a pigs fanny. Which makes your concerns pale into insignificance.

I use the Xena XR1... you can silence it by putting your hand over the cover, but not before the rest of the block will hear. It's actually louder when you arm it (the two beeps). The siren is high pitched though - keys are notched... like the motrax ones. The XN14 has a double locking mechansm like the motrax vishas, but i use both anyway on my bike - the XR1 is just a token gesture of an alarm

I have got the Abus Granit Detecto X-Plus 8000.
I think its very secure, but the alarm is too quiet on it.

As a word of warning, with ear plugs in and an engine running sometimes you can't hear a disc alarm going off before you pull away. A forget-me-not is still a wise investiment!
