PostPosted: 16:14 - 24 Jul 2008    Post subject: Stuck it into the back of a car :/ Reply with quote

On my way back from work yesterday (about 2.30) it was nice and hot so I took what I call the 'scenic' route home from work. Came around the last bend (blind bend) on this road at about 30-35mph to find traffic queued back to where the corner opens up.

Put on both brakes so the bike sat up but it wasn't enough I think I may have lifted the back slightly but my front brake is shit so i'm not sure (yes I am going to bleed my brakes after this). I ended up colliding with a nice, mint MX 5. I hit the back right of the car and carried on across the next lane and into a layby where I came to a stop. Somehow managed to not come off the bike which I was quite pleased about as it minimalised the damage to the bike and me. I guess the speed of impact was somewhere between 10-15mph+.

So the front left of my front fairing collided with the back right of the MX and also my left handle bar/my left hand went through the rear right hand lights.

Damage to the bike:

Cracked front fairing
Left headlight knocked out of place and fittings broken
Damage to the fairing - chipping and 'chunks' of plastic taken out

Damage to the car:

Totally smashed rear right hand lights
General scratching and marking of the body work

Damage to me:

Had to go to hospital for suspected broken left hand which turned out to be just badly bruised after a X-ray
Cut and bruised left knee where it obviously hit the car although I didn't notice this to later at home when getting changed
No other injuries as I was very lucky and didn't come off

What I learned from the crash:

Slow down on blind corners that I don't know OR that lead to junctions
Get some proper gloves. My gloves and trousers were melted from the impact friction and proper gloves would have probally saved my fingers alot better
Use my head more and calm down. I was very lucky, if a car had been coming the other way it may have been someone else writting this. Also, if I had come off the bike then the run off area didn't look very appealing and I would have ended up with alot worse injuries.

This won't slow me down on my bike on the roads that I know but it will definately increase my awareness and slow me down on dodgey corners/blind ones/ones I don't know.

I know that it was totally my fault the accident and I was going too fast for the bend proved by the fact I couldn't stop in time when the worst situation arrived. However, I know you will probally say you could have gone to the side blah blah blah but all I can remember is car, ahh, shit, stop stop stop, dont go into the other lane, bang.

Didn't think this was worthy of BCF but Jamie told me to let you lot take the piss Razz

Cheers,

Matt

PS. The needed google map/ paint picture is attatched along with some pictures of my bike.

unlucky, least the damage isnt too bad

if you are going to pay for the damage to the car yourself be aware how much a new light cluster and paint touch up is
As the guy is gonna want a good job and official parts

Always be able to stop in the distance you can see, that is a very practical and expensive way of finding out.
Like u said, if a car was coming the other way it could have been a lot worse.
Easy mistake to make, just it was unlucky when you made it you hit them

Hope you get it sorted Thumbs Up

FWIW in law there's no such thing as common sense Shocked

As what's common to one person may not be common to another.

However, the phrase to use is good sense.

On topic, if you go for any advance course they'll always say that you should be able to stop in the distance you can see is clear.

So, yes, blind corners are to be approached with that in mind. That's not saying you tip-toe around but you use your good sense Wink based on the conditions and circumstances.

Thumbs Up

Bear in mind that this is a quiet country road there just happened to be a massive bus and another car infront of the the car I hit so not normal amounts of traffic.

Sorry for not being perfect Rolling Eyes

Ok, I didn't actually check my speed but I guess 30ish.

The picture is decieving, it is a totally blind corner and the bushes are quite large on the left. You don't see the car untill you are right around the corner and about to exit, when its sat on the exit.

Its the sort of corner you don't feel safe standing on and I watched alot of cars, while I was waiting for my dad, come round that corner that would have done exactly the same as me, if not worse.

I nearly did this last wednesday, on the way to waitrose which is a nice run to otley, came round a nice bend in a 40 zone going 40 and as soon as i can see round the corner there was a few cars sat at some lights. Bolt upright and brakes on, luckily i stopped.

Then yesterday i was going to waitrose again (only place i can buy british veal - which is now my fave food thanks to the f word) and i did the same thing, which is stupid i guess but i didn't realise it was the same corner.

My thoughts are they should put a sign before the bend saying 'lights 100 yards', especially since its a 40.

I was riding along at 20mph, and a car indicated to turn left, but stopped half in the road he was turning off.

I hit his right bumber and deflected off, just catching my knee Sad

No damage done so i carried on lmao.

Was a shit car though.

Make that double on ones you do know, as they are the ones where you will make the killer mistake, by over confidence.

On the way to otley, think its just before bradford airport (i live in halifax so go through bradford). Its a 40 road which zig zags for about 5 corners, i really enjoy it as its just good to see how far you can lean at this slow speed.

Nearly hit something on a bend, a car I'd been following had gone around then PARKED about 3/4 of the way around the bend before I entered it Shocked . Had to swerve to avoid it, luckily I wasn't going too fast. Then in my mirrors I could see that same car moving off again. Rolling Eyes
