Just had my cat chase a grey squirrel into our flat for it to then hide in the book case. Knowing that squirrels have sharp teeth and a nasty bite I tried to grab it by its tail to put it back outside. Unfortunately the 1st inch of the tail came off on my hand?

Not sure how serious this post is, but they're certainly not like lizards. (Most) Lizards have proper breakage planes along their tail, some can even sheer them without any grabbing.

Squirrels.... At best guess you just pulled a clump off the end.

Well just read this comment of the net:

Its the only defense mechanism a squirrel has... its either the last 2 inches.. which is hair... that breaks very easy... to escape predators.. also... every 2 inches thru the tail bone.. are easy breaks.. but even if it were in the bone... no infection usually occurs... its an even break... god made them that way. Smile
but if it is in the bone.. it does not grow back... if it above the bone.. ( there is fur/hair quite aways above the bone)... it WILL grow back.. may take a while but it will. Smile

Maybe you done it a favour ... maybe it'll grow back bushier, like those little hairs that grow out of men's nostrils.
