just got a Frank Thomas water proof jacket from the bay

slightly dirty but seems it came from a smokers house as it smells of smoke

now ive read the label and it says:

how is that going to get it clean again?

anyone have any other suggestions?

im tempted to use nikwax but not sure if the washing machine will kill the jacket!

any advice?

Damp cloth. If it damages them then you bought some crap textiles.

I've got a non-washable FT jacket as well, I used a bucket of NikWax Tech-Wash and a dish cloth then rinsed it off with a fine spray hose and let it drip-dry.

Hi bigup

Have similar jacket, Mine got dirty not smelly

(But i hate the smell and NO amount of
riding will get rid of it...............! )

So I put mine in washing machine, like demon.

it is now nice and clean and waterproofing still ok.
(And you can always reproof if needed)

better to reproof then have to limit your breathing to avoid the stink............. Very Happy

best regards
Porter

I have used the nikwax range and thought it was pants but on the flip side, I had a cheapie textile jacket I bought for £30 from Brands Hatch.

Black leather and dubbin wins for me now. Ooooer missus.

I shoved my FT waterproof trousers (Aqua force jacket and trousers combo) through the washing machine twice (REMEMBER: COOL WASH SETTING) following a floor+Trousers+Cat+Wee incident (the cat's, not mine.. Smile ).

Best stuff I've found is the Nikwax non-Aerosol tent and gear proofing stuff that stinks like ammonia when you spray it on. I just hung the trousers up on the line and gave them a liberal going over with the stuff. They'd survived the washing machine with no problems.

With a jacket, strip out everything you can from it (Armour, lining etc.) and wash the lining seperately. Don't use any waterproofing stuff for the inner layers and you can chuck a bit of the wash-in nikwax stuff for the outer jacket if you want. Then, hang out to dry for a day or so, Gear proof it and leave to dry again. Then give it a second coating (to make sure you've covered all the surfaces, especially around the pockets and zips).

The only issue I had with mine was water seeping into the outer pockets and through the front zip (in torrential rain) because I forgot to re-waterproof the zips.

Shame they chopped all my gear (new sidi boots as well Sad ) up into a large waterproof fabric jigsaw in my crash...

Or, there's always febreeze. Though, you end up smelling like the stuff instead. Might sound daft, but the stuff you can get to clean up after your dog/cat has vommed on the carpet works wonders.. Smile

K.

Nikwax is ok for re proofing but personally I use Fabsil (tent water proofer)

Bung the jacket in the washing machine on a very cool wash (about 30 degrees) with the usual detergent, gentle spin afterwards, hang the jacket out to dry, once dry spray with the fabsil....

I do it and I've never had any problems with it Thumbs Up
