any ideas what sort of rear cowl would fit my 1991 gs500e?
ive already sorced a place to get belly pans from and ive got some twin lamps. im going to drop the forks in the yokes a bit. a chap suggested to me that an rg250 front forks will fit it.
i was wondering whether there was anything close to be able to fit on the back end to make it look a bit more swish. any suggestions? has anyone looked into it?
im struggling with the idea of renthals at the minute, i cant see how im going to get them to fit aswell.
any advice much apreciated. cheers.
josh.

I have seen them with Yamaha R1 or R6 tail pieces on, not sure how difficult/easy they are to fit.

You can do ANYTHING to a GS really and there are a good few sites dedicated to modding them.

I have on myself im turning into a race-fighter the aim is to keep it functional and reliable while giving it the ability to do the odd trackday/race in the future as well as fighter it.

I'm currently awaiting an rgv rear shock, depending on how much this raises the rear im also fitting jack up bones, im fitting clip ons below the top triple clamp and fitting twin disc cbr forks.

I already have an r1/R6 can and midpipe on there, hopefully going to get a cbr/bandit rear wheel on the back shortly, fitting twin headlights (black, not chrome!) and i've got some cbr rearsets im hoping to fit once i've done a bit of riding on the bike.

Oh i've also polished the rim, painted the frame black (not the neatest job but looks nice still) put in heavier fork oil (didnt make much of a difference to what i bought it with.

And i've also got a bellypan+ flyscreen lined up along with a black paint job and twin white racing stripe down the tank Thumbs Up

None of these mods require any real alteration of anything on the bike, with probabaly the headlights and the exhaust i put on being the worst.

Might put some new indi's on as well but to be honest i'd rather leave them to last.

nothing easily goes on to a gs500,
but if your willing to whipp out the angle grinder and a hacksaw then any thing can be made to fit,

i put a gsxr front end on mine, had a wider bandit 6 rear wheel,
gsxr subframe and seat unit,
custom link pipe and quill can,
sv650 shock, it was a bit of an experiment really, just a prelude to my zxr fighter,
i had loads of fun modding it,

here is a few pics of iceman's gs500
he has fuel injected it and put a turbo on, why?? because he could Very Happy

he basically built it as a show bike, and to show what can be done to a gs500, the rear end is a 280 section Very Happy

awesome sthow does it handle with the wider back tyre on it?
ive noticed today that the stock forks are really spongey. maybe some heavier oil or springs are needed?

I have 15w in my forks and its still far too soft and im only 9stone. im going to up it to 20w rather than buy new springs because the current ones seem fine and theyre getting replaced soon

i know the rgv250 SHOCK fits the GS500 but im not sure about the forks, a direct replacement would need 37mm stanctions though. i think

any front end can be made to fit,
but you need the yokes from the bike that the forks are from,,
you also need to press out the stem from the gs bottom yoke and press it into the donor forks yokes,
the reason the rgv forks and yokes are used is because the stem is the same width as the original gs500 stem, but just a little longer,
so you just need to make up a spacer, instead of pressing out the stems.

i used 20w oil in the original forks and made a longer internal spacer
to increase the preload, it made a good bit of difference,
but the reason i went with a new front end was the extra braking ability, the single 2 pot caliper just doesnt cut it, Very Happy
the twin 4 pots were ace Very Happy

if you are going to do nothing else to your bike, replace the rear shock, with a .. early sv650 shock, a rgv shock, or any number of gsxr shocks with the remote reservoir (not part of the shock)

I got a set of Hagon progressive fork springs for mine. They are longer than the original spring and you don't need to use the spacers.

They are a big improvement even with the adjusters screwed right out.

Any update on this thread?

I've just got a GS500 and I'm wondering what mods to do.

At the moment I've done nothing but I'm looking into getting a remote reservoir RGV250 rear shock, and a bandit 400 hugger.

I'm looking into fitting a 916 exhaust although I have an R6 standard can waiting for some bodging.

I'd love to fit an RGV250 front end, but attaching the clocks is a pain in the arse and it's always quite expensive.
So I've just been buying things to get it running right, and giving it an oil change before I start tarting it up.

I mustn't get too caught up in it! It's only going to be my everyday commuter.

They are a pretty decent bike, not had mine for that long, pretty long selling successful model so they must be ok if the despatch riders use them.

Think I will leave my bike in standardish condition, there are loads of mods that can be done to the bike but how practical are they?

The streetfighters I have seen are different and unique. Looking at them there are not too many improvements on them.

Yes, I would prefer the rear higher tbh, I'm 6' 3" and the bike is rather feminine!

You can change the dogbones to get the ride height back to normal.

Just gotta find a suitable SV shock for cheaps. My shock is fugly and knackered.
