in mid september im moving to lanzarote for an unknown ammount of time (parents have an empty flat there), could be there for a few months or years.

I own an rvf400, 94 reg with around 37,000km (so around 23,000 miles), new chain and sprocket, refurbished fairings, putting new tyres on soon, new collector box and exhaust etc and have had the bike taken apart and put together after giving it a good clean and getting ride of most of the rust.

at first i was thinking about taking it with me but is far too much effort as the island is really crap for registering foreign vehicles (took my dad a year or so to get his ford road legal).

other options are to sell the bike, since its summer i could probobly fetch a good price. when i come back my restriction period should also be up which would be handy so i can get a bigger bike (it would also be mid winter so might get a bike cheaper). I have ridden the rvf unrestricted and although fun its not as powerful as i had imagined when i was riding it restricted so i would probobly get a larger bike in the future anyway.

or keep it locked up in my garage while im away and have a bike ready for me to use when i return. only problem is that my mum has put the house up for sale so chances are the bike would end up sitting outside her new flat for a year (may be able to leave it at a friends house though)

so bassically sell or keep it? do you think the value of rvf's will increase in the future or begin to drop? im wanting to get as much money out of the bike as possible before selling it.

IMO sell it.

Leave it sitting unused for a year isn't going to increase it's value, especially if its sitting outside. Plus you'll either have to keep theft insurance going on it or sort some good security as otherwise you risk being left with nothing.

Selling it is the safest option. In a years time I very much doubt it'll be worth more, it might be worth the same but I'd expect it to be worth less.

well checking about on autotrader and ebay and the bikes are between £2200 and £2900

paid £2600 last october so if i get something back to what i paid for it i'd be happy, theres one for sale nearby for £1800 though Sad, but i can see some rust on the pipes so that might be the reason for it.

guess i might be able to get a higher price as im going to be selling the paddock stand, haynes manual, spare parts and loads of tools with it too.

Don't sell the paddock stand or tools with it cos you'll just have to buy them all again when you get back.

S'easy, all you gotta do is sell it to one of kiddies who're convinced that 400's are the greatest bikes ever. Razz

and Doh! 'bout the paddock stand.

woopsies i ddnt realise i posted this in the workshop, how do i move it to general chat??

yeh 3000 for a 14 year old bike is nuts, but if you had that 14 year old bike would you complain about it?

400 is great for learning on and hold their value's really well, good reason to buy one, like buying a cg125.

but yeh you can get far better bikes for the money, although they wont be as rare.

hoping to get a 2003+ R6 when i come back (the one with projector lights) or a triumph daytona, purely on looks so far but there pretty popular and get descent reviews so cant be that bad.
