Traded a written off cibber I had lying around for a bandit 1200 off a friend of mine who is a bike mechanic.Basically because for him it was a money pit!! It has a snapped cam chain.

Right first thing, is that it has a GSXR1100 crank and cams in it... apparently tha cams are something which is quite widely done. But i just want to know if it will effect the engine in any way I.E. Is this why the cam chain has snapped?
Also when it was running it didnt run very well at low revs AT ALL, any ideas why?
Last thing, what damage can a snapped cam chain do to the engine? He said the back wheel didnt lock so I wouldnt have thought its chucked valves. If need be another friend of mine is flogging a bandit 12 motor for £100.

Cheers for any help, Daz.

Never heard of anyone putting a Gixxer crank in a Bandit though fitting the cams is a common mod. You usually don't get away without some damage if the cam chain breaks , be best to take the head off and check everything.
Snap your mate's hand off for the B12 engine, £100 is a steal you're usually looking at £350 upwards for even a ropey one.
Putting both Gixxer cams in gives more power but moves it to the top end and you lose the Bandit's low down grunt, that and any other mods and fuelling needed checking which is probably why it was running rough.
Just using the intake cam is a better bet, keeps the bottom end grunt and gains a bit of top end .

Hi

Very much doubt you would get away without bending some of the valves if the cam chain snaps. And valves bend easily compared to the force required to lock the back wheel (put it this way, cam chain jumped on my 1200 bending 16 valves without locking the back wheel).

From memory to fit the GSXR cams you need to use the Bandit cam pulley wheels as the chain is a different type. However using a GSXR crank might solve this problem, but might well also mean using differen cam chain guides.

All the best

Keith
