Hi,

I've got a small leak in one of the bolts in the engine. Is on the right hand side. Any ideas for a quick fix? I tried to tight the bolt but wouldnt go further, in fact think it may be wearing...

Thanks in advance.

I can hardly begin to describe how much more detail you need to post if anyone is going to be able to help you.

Start with the make and model of motorcycle then continue with the exact location of the bolt in question, where the oil is coming from in relation to said bolt and a rough idea of how much oil is coming out and when.

Photographs are useful if you aren't sure what a part is called.

Stop trying to tighten it or you'll snap the bolt.

Sorry stinkwheel, you are right.

Its a Triumph speed 4. right hand side where the rad cowl support attach to the bolt of the engine or engine cover (?) Im spanish so I cant describe things as I would like to. I will take pics tomorrow.

Its not a big leak. (yet)

I start the bike and leave it running the leak is minimun, you can feel it wet around the bolt but not dripping or anything. At least in 5 or 10 mins i leave it running. But If I go for a ride, you can see a small trace of the leak as the wind will drag it over the surface. The leak comes around the bolt.

As i Said willt ake pics and post them soon.

Thanks.

Here is a picture of a speed 4 engine. You could save it, draw an arrow on using paint then upload it again. Thumbs Up

I'm not familiar with the speed 4 but that looks like a water pump cover. Are you sure it is leaking oil and not coolant?

I would have thought the best way to stop a leak in that area would be to remove the cover and replace the gasket under it with a new one.

Please don't take my word for this though as I'm no triumph expert.

Its the engine cover:

https://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/triumph-motorcycle-speed-four-2005-engine-covers-vin-210262-and-higher/o/m17649sch568940

Bolt number 11.I think the actual gasket is fine. What is bad is the thread probably or may be the washer for the rad cowl support (which is an extra).

I just replaced the sump so I dont really want to change the oil again!!! bit expensive! Smile

Someone told me I could put instant gasket on the bolt? so I may try that? Has someone tried this?

If you tip the bike a long way over to one side, you should be able to remove that cover without loss of oil.

A paper gasket is not expensive. You can even make them out of cornflakes packets. If you've just spent a lot of money on it, why not do the job properly?

You probably could fit a washer under the bolt and use silicone gasket compound on each side of it. It isn't a proper fix though, the gasket must be leaking or oil couldn't seep around the bolt.

How can i tilt the bike long way to the other side??? Ive put some silicone gasket into a washer of the bolt and hopefully that will stop the leak.

I think that bolt has been rethreaded before.... mmmm...

The instant gasket is a poor way of fixing the leak. If the thread is stripped then it heeds a helicoil or timesert to repair it. A stripped thread would possibly cause oil to leak from under the bolt head.

Applied silicone instant gasket and it has done the trick so far, I will replace the piece or fix it eventually.

I found another leak, small one (which was there before but never realized) its in the cam cover seal. Sad
