Because I have shit credit, I can't get a normal credit/debit card. And it's a bit embarrassing having to borrow someone else's card everytime I want to pay for insurance/buy things off ebay/etc.

Has anyone ever had one of these? What is a good one to go for?

I've got good credit and savings, but I still chose to use a card like this for everyday stuff, so I can never slip up.

I use the Halifax cardcash account and find it great as I can do everything online too.

Most banks offer one so it's down to which bank is easiest for you to get to etc..

Why do you need good credit for a debit card?

I have one for 2 years now and its handy! www.mycashplus.co.uk is the one i have. I need it for ordering stuff of the net as I cant get a currant account with a debit card. Cost £4.99 a month fee but thats no bother. Only thing is if you dont have the pay thing near you have to use post office and it takes a day for the money to show. But its online banking etc.

handy if you dont want to get in debt but need things off the net.

Because you do. If you have a /really/ bad credit history banks won't give you a debit card. They'll offer you a 'basic' car which is usually just a cash card for cash machines.

It seems that they all cost money, except for the Tesco one which requires you to have a credit card to top it up.

But still. I think the best one is the one that costs £10 to buy and you can top it up at Paypoints. I won't be using it very often but it'll come in handy.

Cheers everyone Smile

heck even living at an address where there was a bad debtor can affect your credit rating or used to anyway, my sister always used my cards due to this or that were her excuse anyway.

Not legally for over 20 years, although it is rather more complicated than that (ie, down to number of surnames and matching surnames).

All the best

Indeed - it doesn't affect it anymore. I knew for a fact that I lived at a house for a while where there were thousands and thousands of pounds of unpaid council tax bills, gas bills etc. Court summons letters coming through almost every day. i was a bit worried so I checked my credit file and it listed me at that address fine and made no mention of the unpaid stuff.

The one I have is suppose to be the best one. And I have had no problems with it in 2 years and it is excepted everywhere. It dosnt have a big sign saying pre paid either its a gold card. If you dont use it you wont have a charge to pay. I checked other ones out and they charge you for the amount and some just keep charging after that. Does me fine anyway and I get my stuff online with it all the time.

I have one from mycashplus.co.uk I think i paid a tenner for the card and pay 4.95 a month so i can make unlimited transactions without any charge.

I only use it to buy stuff online because i'm a bit paranoid about putting my debit card details on some sites. At least with the pre paid they can only get what you've put on it and no more.

I've never had problems with it, as long as there is funds on the card it will work anywhere you can use a mastercard.
