Bleh - So I go for my lunch break and take the bike to the shops. On my way back in to the work car park there's a barrier you have to swipe your staff card through to get access. Of course, on the bike that's a bit difficult (gloves, zipped up pockets, etc). So I usually push the button and someone in security raises the barrier and in I go... They recognise me/my bike now so they don't usually ask who I am over the little intercom anymore.

Until just now... the intercom pipes up:

Them - "Hi, can I help you?"

Me - "Hi, I'm a member of staff can you open the barrier please?"

Them - "If you're a member of staff you should swipe your staff card like everyone else."

Me - "That's very difficult as I have full motorcycle gear on, including gloves and my card is in one of my pockets so I can't get to it easily."

Them - "Not my problem"

Me - "They usually let me in, it's never been a problem before..."

Them - "I'm not them, that's some excuse..."

Then the gate opens... I give a graceful thumbs up to the camera (not lowering myself to his level) and go about my business. Neutral

The thing is, I could have just mounted the pavement and went around the barrier (like some other bikers here do), but being courteous, I thought I should stay in the road, especially as they sent some email around recently telling motorcyclists not to ride on the pavement.

So I open the floor to BCF... does anyone else have trouble getting in/out of their workplace due to jobsworth security folk? Is this a kind of discrimination against motorcycle riding people? Discuss!

depends where you work. due to the type of place I work in, noone would get in without showing ID or being facially recognised by member of security staff. Biker with helmet on = no chance

but if you work in a factory etc then no id expect you to get in ok

I have trouble getting inside my complex at work due to the cocks on the barriers being power hungry. I end up parking in the car park where you need a permit but there's no barriers to stop me so fuck them.

This is all in a car mind you, the people who go in by bike get in

This is a university and you also need a permit to park if you have a car. As said, security recognise my bike/me now and my lid is a flip front so I lift it up so they can see me. Bikes slip in under the radar, as it were, and we just park them out of the way wherever we can. They've never been bothered with that. Today was just out of the ordinary. Maybe the guy is having a bad day or something. Rolling Eyes

When Courering you will encounter the most petty jobsworths possible,

They can see you have your hands full with 4 boxes of data tapes but still insist you remove your flip up helmet.

I dont know i find security people jobsworths 79% of the time, Its either little man complex or they are pissed off they are too ignorant to get into the police (which lets face it is pretty ignorant).

Also Petrol station attendants in regards to removing helmets after you have filled up etc.

Last year some time at uni, where there is an in and out barrier for the cars, with room of either side of the barrier for a bike to squeeze through i was riding towards it, the out barrier had been left open, so instead of squeezing past the in one i just went through, I had security pull up a few minutes later yellow lights a flashing on their nissan Navara (it dont get no respect from me) and had a go for using the incorrect entrance.

I explained to him that there was absolutely other vehicles around and that he should use common sense, he dident like that, he looked like an old retired copper so i responded to his mild threats by saying, you do what you got to mate and walked off...

I said it somewhere else, Little people with their little rules are best treated with the quiet contempt you bestow upon a small child that shows you a picture...

Glad I'm not the only one encountering this... I should have mentioned that we have another barrier further up that is just wide enough for me to squeeze round so I (and every other rider) do just that. It's just when I reach this one, I have no other option than to push the button, or fumble around trying to get my card out (which involves taking my gloves off etc, pissing off drivers behind me as they have to wait), or mounting the pavement to go around it.

No, never my security guards are alright. I sometimes have to wake them up to get them to open the gates on nights but other than that they are fine.

My dad is a firealarm engineer and travels all over the place if he goes into london and it is nice he will go on the bike, some places don't like him coming in in bike gear he generally just leaves it's there problem and will cost them more to call him out again.

The was another time (un bike related) he was wearing shorts he comes into this building (with the fire alarm going off) and a security guard stops hims

"Hi i'm here to fix the alarm"
"You can't come in like that"
"like what?"
"with shorts on"
"why?"
"some people might find your legs offensive"
(to reseptionist) "Do you find my legs offensive love?"
"*giggles* No there quite nice actually"
Security guard "Your not coming in"
"fine call the office and book me in again then if it's hot I will be wearing shorts though and you will be charged"
*Alarm still going off he goes to walk out*
"Er actually you can come in, since it's an emergency"

Laughing

I love making jobsworths look silly, my dad is good at it plus he is in a job where it doesn't bother him at all if people don't let him in somewhere.

Haha that's great, what a moron! Thing is, say you come in with a turban or other religious dress on... they wouldn't dare call it offensive!

Just remember these guys are just doing their jobs and if they mess up, they lose them......
For all they know you could be anyone.
We have to swipe or passed to get into car park. Always keep it in top pocket of coat and slip glove off, to swipe it.
No great hardship.

While most may know you, someone may have got caught out and let someone in who should not be there....

That's fair enough but he didn't have to have a condescending, patronising attitude with me. He could have been polite. I guess the drivers behind me will have to wait a little longer each morning from now on.

Our security system uses passes or tinny little black things usually held you your belt by a retractable cord. You may be able to get one of them and attache it to your glove.

I've got my pass on a cord that auto retracts, so I just leave it dangling outside of my riding trousers and pull it to the card scanner when I reach the barrier. They give people who use our car park a remote control for the roller shutter, so I taped that to the dash on my bike. No need to take gloves off, hooray!

Somebody on another forum had his bike nicked by two guys on a bike. They were let in without a staff pass, and a short while later, rode out on two separate bikes, with the barrier opening up automatically.

One of my old places of work had a card operated roller shutter door on the car park. Thankfully all you had to do was pass the card over a sensor (rather than through a slot) and up the door went. The staff that had cars had the car park pass built in as part of their works ID card. I asked to have mine separate and then kept the car park access card in the right forearm armour pocket, just under the outer skin of the jacket - I just used to wave my arm at the sensor and up went the door. Very Happy

Like lift passes at ski resorts. Except when the scanner decided its having a huff and your lift pass is near your groin it looks like you're trying to shag the sensor. Laughing

I don't have problems at work, just problems getting my bike in & out of the house. I live in a permit parking only area and got a parking ticket 2 weeks ago while bike was outside the house & I had nipped back in to get my gear. Bloody jobsworth, I was 5 minutes and the b*stard must have stuck the ticket on and legged it as he was nowhere to be seen and I live on a longish straight road.

Security guards are okay where i am.
You have to show a pass as it is a government site and we all know how much they love their rules and regulations, but i just have it round my neck.
On the road onto the site, unzip coat, show pass, barrier goes up, nod to security guy

At dinner the barriers are down and pass needs to be scanned, as long as you have the pass on show most will lean into the hut and press the barrier up button to save you messing around

had more problems with them on a push bike at a different site when i rode on the pavement to get to the bike sheds (great place for bike sheds hey)

End of the day it is their job, i could be anyone on my bike, if they decided to stop me and make me take my helmet off, fair enough, as long as it was consistant with all guards.

I went to army officer training at Sandhurst and we used to have to do guard duty as part of our training - I remember having to stand there with my rifle trained on a guy on a motorbike who was just trying to ride it through without showing a pass.

He son found a way to get all the gear off quickly Laughing

No, but we have some idiots working next door, who are always removing nails, or screws out of wood, and not clearing it up. I have had god knows how many punctures same with works vehicles because of them, I have even told them to stop. How ever today one of them got a puncture. Really some people shouldnt be allowed outside to interact with others. You get them in all walks of life, the complete idiots who think they know best. My advice, rise above them, then laugh in there face when it goes tits up for them. Thumbs Up

Theres no point there being a security system if people arent going to use it.

So if its there, it should be used.

Places Ive worked with security passes, ppl had a retractable pass card holder that clips to their belt.

I know petrol stations dont like bikers wearing their helmets due to robberies, but it encourages bikers to use flip up helmets which have the same protection as an open face helmet not a full face one.

A friend died wearing one, and I think he may have lived if he had a proper helmet on.
