Went out for a blast with my mate today on my RS 50 and he was on his Speedfight 2 Iron-X.

Went from Enfield in North London up towards Harlow on the A10.

Quite a good blast up that way and got an indicated speed of 68mph.

Not sure how accurate that actually is but I think a 60 true speed is realistic Thumbs Up

Anyway had to slow down for my mate on his Speedfight all the time so we decided to hit some country roads so onto the A414 from Harlow it was Thumbs Up

Bike was running well and really enjoying all the twisties Razz

Coming up to a roundabout on the outskirts of Chemslford.

The roundabout with Greenbury way and Margaretting Road just outside Writtle.

Just as I approach the round about I kick down to 2nd and all of a sudden screeching.

So I'm like WTF Confused I pull over and check all the essentials. Petrol, Chain, 2 Stroke and everything I could check and fired it back up and it starts screeching again Neutral So I'm like really confused by this point and begin to think I've blown my top end Evil or Very Mad but then I clutch in and it revs without screeching. So I assume that the engine is fine and my gearbox has blown.

So called up the house and got my Mum to call me a recovery truck for £80.

But they took about 1.5 hours and this guy pulled over and had a look for me. He reckons the clutch bearing but I had never heard of this so I was confused. But he helped me stand it up right as it was sinking into the grass and stood around talking for a good hour and I offered him a drink for his help but he insisted not to take it. Top geezer Thumbs Up So my mate rings his Dad about it and he says because I can pull away in first with the noise but not get into 2nd it must be the gearbox.

So whilst I was waiting I thought I'd take a video and some photo's for all of your interest's Thumbs Up

https://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm255/DeclanJ/13042006280.jpg

https://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm255/DeclanJ/13042006281.jpg

https://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm255/DeclanJ/13042006282.jpg

https://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm255/DeclanJ/13042006284.jpg

75 Mile trip in 2 days Thumbs Up 28 today Smile

So I got home eventually when the recovery truck turned up at 6.30pm and I broke down as 4.21 Evil or Very Mad

Got home and drained my gearbox oil but hardly any come out

https://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm255/DeclanJ/13042006285.jpg

I think this could be the problem?

I'm going to fully drain it and then refill it. If the problem stays I'll check the clutch plates and hopefully that will sort it as I can't be forking out for a new box Sad

Video Coming Soon Thumbs Up

I just realised the service light is on. Shocked

75ml Shocked

With all your high speeds that sounds very bad.

Would say use a older box, just had a look about and the older ones use AM6 engines.
so unless you can find another person whos written the bike off and you can engine translplant or want to take it apart and get it done...

Bluex5, the flog the bike, wouldnt they notice on a testride when the oil starts to heat up as im guessing gearbox oil heats and goes thin then the box makes noise again?

Hmm I am in to minds whether I caused it. It was an early kick down but it wasn't as if it went round to 12k and bounced off the limiter.

I kicked down and it went back around to 10k and then sounded shit.

Confused

When you changed out the gear did you get a cracking sound at all?

The easy easy option is to get another bottom end (or new engine) and do a straight swap, however splitting the cases and having a look to see if its gear box/clutch isn't complex; It just takes time and tools.

Erm no crackling sound just a loud scraping.

74.2 miles since I bought the bike and had it on the road.

I doubt I'm going to be replacing the engine tbh Thumbs Up

Not sure its gear related as I got a huge crack when I broke my second gear.

If you got a gasket you could take the cover off of the clutch side and take a look at it? They need a special tool to take off usually though.

I had that happen to me, my bike got knocked over (this is an rs 125 but there pretty much the same) and the balancing gears snapped and i had this horrible noise, also my bike got VERY low on gear-box oil when it was brand new and my clutch plates went because of it (oil went before the first service!) just an idea for you, could be your balancing gears because mine sounded like yours did aswell Thumbs Up

Well i got told the oil get absorbed by new clutch plates when they are wearing in so i think thats where it went? Not sure as i dont know alot about clutches etc.

Was just an idea to try and help him (thats if you were talking to me?) Thumbs Up

Clutch plates don't absorb oil or else they would crumble like a biscuit you just dipped in your coffee.

Most likely is it's either leaked out or gone into the combustion chamber through and crapped up seal.

Think I have found the cause.

Whilst draining gearbox oil, the drain point on the bottom is leaking out gearbox oil.

Obviously the last owner hasn't done it back up properly.

I'm hoping it will just refill and work again.
