Does anyone know of a decent 'stop leak' type fluid that i can use to temporarily stop a pretty decent leak ive got coming from my engine.

Its leaking gearbox oil, but will only leak when i have gone out and come back. It will not leak when the engine is off (not very fast anyway) or when it is idling. And as some of the leak was around the bottom of the gear lever oil seal, i suspected it and replaced it to find another small puddle of oil when i parked it up after a ride.

I think there may be a small crack in the crankcase.

Is there any type of 'gunk' or something that i can use to stop it or any type of fluid to add to the oil, until i have the time to take the engine out and repair it properly?

Can you use things like Radweld in there or is it strictly a no-go!?

Thanks, Ant Thumbs Up

Some sort of chemical metal type substance?

Halfrauds will stock something.

Reminds me, I've got to go and do the same to my sv. Ta.

Might also be worth trying to use some sealer before it.
Make sure its proper clean before using it to make sure it bonds properly too!

What i used last time i did this kind of repair i used Hermitite was red stuff for sealing engine blocks i think.

If you pop into any shop and ask for something like gasket sealer or something similar as it has the same properties of not letting fluid escape

Anything along the lines of
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Granville-Blue-Instant-Gasket-Silicone-sealer-40g-Tube_W0QQitemZ360077862975QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item360077862975&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.l1318
something like that.

If your taking the casing off, clean thoroughly, whack the sealer on the inside of the rear, let it go off, then from the outside use the chemical metal and add a bit inside if you want, or just leave it as sealer either should be fine id of thought.

Hi mate, what do you mean about the casing? And 'inside the rear' and 'outside'? Embarassed

I was planning on taking the engine out, but not splitting it. Just using the stuff in your link to put on the bottom on the engine, where the crack is. Would this not work?

Ah, i know what you mean about the sealer now, ive got some stuff called 'blue hylomar', pretty sure its the same thing.

Sorry if im missing the point a bit EmbarassedLaughing

Does it still leak if you go out & don't come back? Cool

Of the chemical metals on the market, one called "JB weld" is probably one of the better ones.

I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to de-grease the area thoroughly first. Brake cleaner does an excellent job of de-greasing without leaving a residue.

That said, if you're taking the engine out, why not take it to someone who can do aluminium welding and get them to weld the crack up for you? This is assuming it is on a non-functional part of the crankcase

Thanks mate, Ill do a search for it!

Im going to make sure everythings de-greased under there as i am going to take the engine out and try and do it properly. Its coming from a curved part of the crankcase, sort of tube shaped. Near where a bolt goes in, so i dont know if i can get it welded or not?

Thanks, Ant Thumbs Up

Almost anything can be welded if you have a sufficiently good welder.

There is a guy about 20 miles from me who I know for a fact has welded a new crown into a holed piston off a rare engine.

I've had big lumps welded back onto crankcases before and I've had an alloy "patch" welded over a 2" hole in the water pump cover on a bike following a crash.

I've only ever bought JB weld online.

Actual welding would be far better though, you just need to find someone who actually knows what they are doing. For that you will need to find out what's the word on the street Fuzzy Bear.
