Anyone got experience of part exchanging a bike?

....for another bike?

Bought my bike (04 blandit) in April for £2.2k having done just under 4k. It had no stamped service history, the bloke I bought it off had just serviced it himself. Well I've put another 3k miles on it and so its due another service.

But I want to part exchange it soon.

My question is; is it worth me having it serviced before I part x it? Would it be worth more money like that? Or should I just let them do it and accept a lower value for it?

It could also do with a few other bits doing (new sprocket, indicator is cracked) so again is it worth doing these before selling it, or just accept the reduced price?

And are you likely to get better part x price than if you were selling it privately (as you generally do with cars)?

Surely you would get a better price going the private route, rather than part exchanging? As you have to allow for the dealer mark up etc.

You'll get a better price selling it privately rather than part ex'ing it, just the same as with cars. Thumbs Up

You'll be able to sell it more easily if you service it and do the few other bits than need doing, but I'd have thought the cost of doing it all will be more than how much extra you'd be able to sell it for compared to selling it now as it is.

yeah, I just read that other thread about part-x, and consensus seems to be you'll get a better price privately, although its more hassle.

Ste, thats pretty much what I'm trying to work out; whether the cost of doing it all is worth it. suppose you get more people interested if its all spick and span.

Do you know if the lack of service history if I dont get it serviced will be a problem?

Most buyers wouldn't be worried about service history on a bike with such low mileage. It has probably only had a couple of oil and filter changes anyway.

Yes, getting a fresh MOT done will put any buyers mind at ease knowing it has just has a thorough check over and is safe.

Service history means nothing on a low mileage bike.

When I p/x my 125 for the 600 we agreed a price 2 weeks before and when I took the bike in I had all the paperwork (manual, service book etc) in my rucksack. I gave the guy the keys and the log book but in my excitement of getting my new 600 forgot to give him the contents of my bag. They never asked for it either, as they had my address.

So I'd say no don't bother servicing it as all the lovely stamps in my book were a waste of money. Now I do my own servicing Thumbs Up

Although I'm such a lazy bastard that accepting less dosh without the hassle of having to clean and list the thing for sale actually seems reasonable.

My attitude to money is a serious character flaw Sad

Anyone want to come round to clean and sell it for me, and i'll give you a cut.... say 7.5% of the selling price?
