Been to view a 2001 J2 Zx6r. Around 25k on the clock. Seems in overall very good condition. 2 owners from new, datatagged. Its up for 2grand. Here are the faults: aside from genearlly being very clean it has been dropped or grazed against something. Only parts to suffer damage are all on one side - bar end, very slight scuff on mirror, grab rail scuffed badly, dent and scrape to can in two places. There is also a indicator missing. Other than that cosmetically its fine. Mechanical wise - Rear tyre has only couple of thou left in it. Front and rear pads need doing. As an estimate im guessing it would cost about £250-£300 to put the above right. How much do you think the bike is worth with full mot, but the rest left unattended too?

Thumbs Up

Seems a bit overpriced, I'd be thinking more like £1500 at this time of year, I reckon.

ye i thought it was a bit steep at 2k, maybe if it didnt have the damage and in need of tyres/brakes. It is in a dealer hence the slightly inflated price. Ive considered offering them £1700, or will they laugh in my face being dealers and all???

Ah, a dealers... yea, basically try and get it for whatever you can.
But remember that dealers have got to pay several members of staff, rent and everything else before they even start to make money... and that money has to come from somewhere.

Don't sound like it's been particularly looked after, if both sets of pads need doing Confused Fucking lazy owner to leave both front and rear to rot...

Or just making good use of the available pad material?
Don't see the point in changing pads when there's still half left, unless you've got dodgy brakes that need it in the first place.

A few thousands miles left on tyres is plenty on a sports bike, generally; depending on the tyre, of course.

Its a trade in, you generally wouldnt start replacing brakes and tyres if they needed doing around the time you were trading the bike in i suppose. ? .
Whats your thoughts on buying a bike that had clearly had a small drop or bump? ? Would it put you off completely or would the fact it would only cost a very small amount to rid of all damage spur you on to use it as a bargaining tool??

I have had a G2 ('99) for a couple of months, and apart from the pretty big fact i has been clocked, and actually has 28k its a very capable bike, Equally good in London traffic or munching the miles up, pretty rapid too...

Pay attention to the front 6pot calipers, they are known to be spongy when ignored...

Tyres - if you want sports touring types - Dunlop Roadsmarts/Michelin Pilot Road 2's are about £220 fitted, Pirelli diablo stradas are about 170 or less fitted (prices for pairs). Front pads - £40-£50 for HH compounds depending on brands - vesrah, gold fren, bendix, ebc etc.

As with any kwaka, BITS will go within a few winter's use. Please do check your front brakes for warpage (replacements from ABE are 110 a piece), rear shock - ebay, but chances are they'll be shagged as well - so hagon is 255. You'd probably want to clean your calipers every 6 months to keep them tip top, especially the 6 potters.

2 grand is a bit too much, as G said, for a J, 1500 is a reasonable price - 25000 miles is good. The engines will keep on going. You can expect used bikes to have gone down the road so accept it. Offer him £1500 and see what happens.

Once you're coming to this age, majority of bikes probably have been.
Just depends whether or not they've been tarted up again after.

but in response to the OP, i think that bike is well overpriced in the current market.

TAKE THIS FOR EXAMPLE - an A1P 636 with low miles, he wanted 2k buy it now so probably around £1800 reserve.

Damage on the one side suggests it's been down at least once, and even minor damage can be expensive to put completely right.
Combine that with the need for replacement pads and tyres, I would certainly be looking to pay less than £2k.

And that's the reason dealers can stay in business... people are stupid and happy to pay their prices.
