If you're going to leave it locked up outside work I'd consider swapping the seat clamp for a non quick release one, and do the same for the wheels.

Scum can't resist pinching anything off bicycles, usually just for the sake of it.

Yup, I work in an Science Park - you wouldn't think scum would come near it, but we are close to a housing estate in Oxford. Some kids just walking through took the saddle of my colleague's bike - it had quick release.

You don't know where I work , there are these things called 'hills' around here, steep hills. AND I have to carry my audit boxes around with me.

I'm having trouble finding replacements for quick release saddle and wheel clips, is there a category for them on the Evans website? Cos I can't bloody find em! Sad

It would put my mind at rest, you can get Pragmasis chains in 10mm as well Smile

The part you are looking for is a "seat clamp". All bikes have different sized seat tubes, so you need to find out what size your bike has, and it has to be spot on or you'll get slippage.

https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/SearchResults.aspx?Search=seat+clamp

Look at the non QR skewers in this list, can't see them on Evans website.

iirc the clamps are always slightly bigger than seatpost diameter, if you can wait until you get the bike the correct seat clamp size should be printed on the inside of the existing QR clamp.

After riding different bikes I wouldn't want any less than what I have how, which is a Specialized Hard Rock Pro, about £600 I think when new, I got mine Second hand in perfect condition on ebay for £211

I love Specialized I have had 2 and my dad has one they make great bikes.

Yeah I imagine I can wait, this looks like a good bit of kit:

Yes, with alarming regularity as I have lots and lots of family and friends still there.

I'd be wanting a discount on a 2008 bike right now, most bike shops are selling them off cheaper to make way for the 2009 spec bikes.

What Mo said, see my comments HERE. You may find that you'll be paying more on the bike to work scheme (assuming you pay full whack) than you would if you were paying cash.

With regard to the tyres, I'd go for something like THESE for on road riding.

Thanks Steve :)

The figures look ok to me:

Code:
Total cost inc. VAT before savings   £750
Total cost exc. VAT before savings   £642.02
Monthly salary sacrifice (1)      £53.50

Total cost after saving         £443
Effective monthly cost (2)      £36.92

That's a pretty big saving!

No problemo Tobes - in reality the ride2work scheme is really good and you're getting a helluva deal.

However (yeah, there's always a 'however'), if you can afford to pay cash you could just fire off an email to maybe 5 or 6 suppliers who hold the Specialized in stock and ask if they'd be willing to beat the £443 price. Something along the lines of...

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have recently been quoted a price of £443 for the Specialized Rockhopper Disc 2008 Mountain Bike using the bike2work scheme. I would prefer to deal with your Company as my friends have given you glowing references. As you have the bike in stock I'd be grateful if you could inform me if you'd be willing to better this price.

Thankyou Very Much.

Tobes.

That's what I did although I didn't have the option of the bike2work scheme so just gave the retailer the price I wanted to pay and asked if they'd be willing to let the bike go for that price.

Either way it's a fantastically specced bike for the money. Make sure you take it off road Wink

When I was selling Specialized bikes they were on a 50% mark up. We were able to give up to 30% off to get someone to buy the bike. I'd go for getting 10-15% off retail for the bike and lots of free stuff which the shop will be more willing to do.

Specialized Armadillo tyres would be ideal if you are going for just road riding.

Spesh bikes generally come with poor spec for the price (paying for the name). There are a lot of frames just as good with much better spec available for the same price, but the Spesh has the cult following. They normally skimp on brakes (Avid's have little feel imo), shifters are normally fairly low spec too.

I thought the opposite of the Avid Juicy 3's when I had a go on a mates Rockhopper at Afan, more feel than my HFX-9's but seemingly not quite as powerful.

It's not a bad spec for the money and the M4 frame (which was only used on 1k Stumpjumpers until last year) is good if a touch low on ground clearance.

They felt nice to me when I tried it out in the shop, but I'm a complete luddite when it comes to pushbikes, I'm pretty sure I couldn't tell the difference between that and an 80 quid full susser in a back to back test. (Unless I had it for a week, in which time I'd of probably killed it, LOL)
