If your going to say its illegal to derestrict it a 16 its also illegal to derestrict it at 17 even with a full licence. A moped is a moped because of how its designed, not because of who is riding it. To legally be derestricted it must first be classed as a motorcycle requiring it to take a test. I think it needs to have things like a main beam and a number plate light.

Is there a washer in the variator? There was on my 50

on a cbt you can ride up to a 125 if you are 17 which dont have to be restricted to a certain speed just bhp(15) or something like that. if you are 17 and have a moped shops will derestrict it because it is legal. you just need to inform the insurance company.

No, its the bike that makes it a moped not the rider. The bikes are not built to be used above 30mph (most of them are good enough though). The law has a criteria that a bike must meet for it to be a Motorcycle or for it to be a Moped. If a 50cc scooter was registered as a Motorcycle you would be able to do over 30mph but not until your 17.

Not as far as I know, though obviously you do need to tell your insurance.

I can't remember exactly where I read it but that is the case. I derestricted my 50 when I was 16 anyway. Its a silly law.

I think all mopeds and motorcycles come under the taxation class 'Bicycle', I don't think there's any difference.

It would be illegal under the insurance as to the company it would no be what they are expecting a moped does 31mph and thats what it is if you derestricted it, it would be like trying to insure a turbo busa but not mentioning the turbo.

Yes, but the insurance don't ask whether it's a 'moped' or not.

If you had a Peugeot Speedfight 50 (for example), and derestricted it, it would still be, and would still be insured as, a Peugeot Speedfight 50.

You just need to tell them that it's derestricted, that's all.

Yes, the bike would need to be re-registered as a motorcycle, which I think requires an SVA test.

But the whole point is that that Peuget Speed fight as standard can only do 31mph that is what they are insuring it as.

If the engine is mounted on the swingarm rather than in a frame, then it's a scooter or moped, not a motorcycle. Wink

I will not budge on this. Wink

Weird things, with their handlebars encased in plastic, go-kart sized wheels and a footwell instead of footpegs will NEVER be a motorcycle. Razz

If your balls (or lady garden) aren't in the firing line of an engine blow up, it is NOT a motorcycle.

That is all.
