Anybody watching this?

A few episodes have been on and it's really good. Proper adventure, just one bloke, his bicycle and his camera, no support or anything.

Available on iPlayer - be quick to get ep 1.

i caught about 20 Minutes of it at the end today.

Seemed like quite a good series/program.

Wished I'd seen all of it now.

Turns out there's 4 episodes in total so hopefully the 4th will appear on there soon, whenever it airs.

Cycling through the Australian outback looked surreal, especially that 90 mile straight.

Heading in the same direction, same horizon, heat and a strong head-wind, I bet some lesser-minded people would crack mentally.

Agreed, his willpower and mental strength thankfully is equally matched by his physical ability - Respec' as they say, is due.

Enjoyed your Alps adventure by the way Mo, fantastic read - I'm planning on cycling the Alps in 18 months (road not mtb) although am doing it the lazy way and driving down there, having a base and backup (well, the wife!). I plan to do a couple of climbs but my main goal is Alpe D'huez - Any further pearls of wisdom?

Oh and to go totally off topic - With the imminent release of '09 bicycles, now's the time to haggle for the '08 models, I've just got nearly 25% off the rrp (rrp was £499) of a Marin Northside Trail just by emailing Marin retailers and politely enquiring if they'd be prepared to do a deal.

Thanks. Have you read the book "French Revolutions" by Tim Moore? He does most of the classic climbs and is very funny, similar to your style of writing.

I would take some time into making sure you have some low enough gears to spin the lactic out of your legs, that's the main killer when in 1st gear your legs start filling up with crap and there's no let up in the gradient.

Yeah I have - I just plagiarise his best bits Wink

Thanks for that, I'm considering running a triple crankset at the front although part of me considered it the Pussy's way out. However, I think you've made my mind up - meow Wink

Thanks for the advice Thumbs Up

I did about 1% of what he's doing and was fucked, the killer is having all that luggage as well!

@SteveH, the idiots who are the ones who insist on trying to push a double crank, always funny when I glide past on my granny gear. I do weigh fuck all which helps as well though. Laughing If you can I'd drive the route first, then you have rough mental points of how far you have to go. The mental toughness comes in when you dont know where your finish is.

Thanks for the advice, funnily enough my wife mentioned that as she wants to know where she's going to get in front for a few photograph's, I hadn't even thought that it might benefit me Thumbs Up

Even the TdF guys use compact doubles in the Alps, a standard double would be crazy!

I had a triple, and went from the standard 12-25 cassette to an mtb 11-28. But my bike was a lot heavier with the panniers, so you may be ok cassette wise.

There's actually marker points every so often telling you your current altitude (and sometimes road distance to the top) on most of the French climbs.

Yeah, I realised that I'd need a smaller double but think I'll just go for the triple instead and might just add the cassette too as my road bike (Coppi Lugano) is a few years and many miles old - looks like Messrs Campagnolo/Shimano could be benefitting from so 'H' cash Shocked

And there's NO WAY I'm doing it with luggage - Nutters Wink

Be better off getting SRAM. The one system that required the least amount of adjustment.

If you go down the other route I'd just buy Shimano 105, or at most Ultegra. I had a meeting with Shimano guys where they showed us all the new stuff. 105 is more than up to the job for most people, Ultegra is getting near overkill. Dura-ace is a waste of money.
