Just a really random general question really. I'm sure you've all seen it on Top Gear, or the interweb, or used it in Gran Turismo.

https://www.autospies.com/images/users/carlover99/nissan-gt-r.jpg

I post on a couple of car forums and it's been sparking some pretty healthy debate. Inevitably you get some strong opinions both for and against, but I'm not interested in that.

What I'd like to know, is just a quick straw poll - is the Nissan GT-R a supercar, in your opinion? I shan't tell you what I think as I don't want to bias it one way or the other. Simple yay or nay, supercar or not? Thumbs Up

Obviously feel free to banter and argue about whether it's brilliant or shit also Smile

I know a few folk who are on the waiting list for it,

got one person already wanting to book me for photos for the week they get theirs.

I think it just makes supercar status due to its handling and outright power.

Most supercars will start to over-steer and go sideways whilst your still able to put down the power in this.

it seem to have a mix of the handling of an exige but with the power of a supercar.

Mmmmmm looks so.. beastly yet super sexy Thumbs Up

EDIT in fact, I have a picture on my wall of one in red head to head with a white Audi R8. Shove a blue GTR34 in the middle face on and you've got the perfect poster. Smile

Supercar is a term generally used for a high-end sports car, whose performance is highly superior to that of its contemporaries. It has been defined specifically as "a very expensive, fast or powerful car with a centrally located engine, and stated in more general terms: "it must be very fast, with sporting handling to match," "it should be sleek and eye-catching" and its price should be "one in a rarified atmosphere of its own. but the proper application of the term is subjective and disputed, especially among enthusiasts. The use of the term can be dependent on the era: a vehicle that may have been considered a supercar at one time may not retain its superiority indefinitely. The term supercar may refer to factory-built, street-legal sports cars. Some supercars include some of the features required for race cars, like the roll cage, while other supercars are in general race cars with only the minimum legal required modifications made (e.g. meeting emission regulations, legal tyres, limited exhaust note) to be street legal.

It meets nearly all the criteria.

Yes its a supercar.

Ugly little bug isn't it Sick

I've always thought supercar to mean bloody expensive and designed to look fast not necessarily go fast. As face it many 'supercars' including old ones that are still classed as supercars are slower than a £20K Lancer Evo which isn't a supercar.

Its a supercar for the people! Cool

If it can lap the 'ring faster than a GT3RS, then its blatantly a supercar. There are plenty of ugly supercars around, so its not about looks. There are some expensive slow cars around so it isn't about price.

Its about performance, and the GTR has that in spades. Of course its a supercar dammit! and why does it have to cost £20k more in the UK than in Japan Dammit?

And why can't I afford one Dammit!?! Laughing

i voted no as i don't think main stream manufacturers make supercars, so that includes the R8.

to me a supercar is made by companies that just make supercars.

I've never really thought of the R8 as a supercar either, it's got an Audi badge, costs about 80grand and just don't really come across as one, bit like a porsche 911, never really considered that a supercar either until you get to the really fancy versions, the GTS RR Carrerra TTRS or whatever they call it.

Yeah, but to that end, let's not for get that Audi own Lamborghini and the R8 is a cheap mini lambo. Wink Surely that means it is? And if that is, the GTR is Thumbs Up /Clarkson.

To me, yes - alongside things like the Ultima GTR, but others would see that as they're not ridiculously expensive for the performance, they shouldn't be.

On Phoenix's Evo point; I'd usually expect a 'supercar' to be 2 door, rather than 4.

So is a ford GT not a supercar?
https://cache.jalopnik.com/cars/assets/resources/2007/04/Ford-GT.jpg

Plus Lamborghini started off as a tractor firm. Does that make all of their cars *not* supercars?

That is the strangest logic I've ever heard. Bugatti are owned by VAG So the veyron is clearly not a supercar...

It's too cheap for a supercar, and it arguably has 4 seats. It's an amazing motor mind Thumbs Up

Hi

To my definition of a supercar, no it isn't. Doesn't mean that I don't think it is a great car.

To me, a supercar is one were performance is paramount with few concessions. Afraid having 4 seats, to me, is a compromise that stops it being a supercar.

All the best

Keith

Can carry 4 people resonably comfortably, doesn't look like a futeristic spaceship crossed with a missle, and doesn't cost over 100K.

It has the performance, but not the out and out looks of a supercar.

IMO...

It really isn't.

The Skyline is a thorough bred race car, and Datsun was a subsidiary of Nissan only a more executive brand (as some may know).

Wiki Clicky Highlighting each brand's car's history. Note Skyline noted under Nissan yet never referenced with Datsun. Wink

No, the original Skyline GT-R is at best a muscle car. It's a bit heavy and has it's roots in a crap family saloon, a lot like the sort of stuff you see from the Americans, except the Skyline manages to handle a bit better (though watching a stock one go round the track looks alarmingly like a whale with oversteer issues). It's undoubtedly a very fast, capable car but it's a bit overhyped to be honest.

The new GT-R on the over hand, has more claim to being a true supercar, being as how it has no base over than itself, but only in the way the new Z06 and ZR-1 Corvettes have. They are packed with so much technology that it is hard to deny them that status.

However I'd like to remind you that a lot of these newer cars from companies like Pagani, Ferrari, Bugatti etc. aren't considered supercars anymore, they are hyper cars. Hyper expensive, hyper fast, hyper rare. They've moved the goal posts on a bit.
