Hey all - made my first noob mistake today (felt like a biggy too.)

Passed my test a few weeks ago - traded up from my City Fly to a nicely blinged GPX250 - not a huge step up but feels great.

At the weekend I went and bought myself a nice Shoei helmet in the sales - had been using a cr*ppy £29 LiDL helmet on the 125.

All in all it's a joy to get on the bike.

Stopped off at tesco on the way home to buy baccy - back on the bike, zoomed onto the dual carriageway - opened the bike up and .. ..

hmm whats tapping on my head - I'd forgotten to do the strap up - never down that before - felt like a bit of an idiot really - hmm

Done that before, only went half a mile or so, but i am paranoid about it now. Every so often I check it is fastened, even though I know it is.

Least you noticed before it was needed Thumbs Up

I remember doing this once, and pulling away so hard (showing off) that it started to slide upwards LOL

I've done this a couple of times myself - like most people it seems!
I was in traffic as the road ahead was closed (didn't know at the time) and the police officer was telling everyone to turn around, then told me i hadn't done my helmet up and that i should pull into the next junction and sort it out before i turned around and went back the way i came. Glad he told me though.
Another time i did it, and for one reaosn or another every thing felt right on the ride home, everything slotted into place perfectly and i was giving it some and was heading home quicker than usual, hitting roundabouts faster and taking bends smoother - everything was perfect. until i got home, went to undo my helmet and it wasn't done up, i was just glad i had got away with my slightly faster riding without anything going wrong as it could have so easily gotten very nasty riding with what was effectiley no helmet.

Now though i do it up, get on the bike up and start the engine etc, pull away, re-check it and i tend to check it at least once when riding - quite often a few times more though, it's helped at least once where i'd thought it was done up, but obviously not properly and had come apart (i have the caberg V2 with a seat belt style buckle) and i noticed it tapping on my neck, checked it and stopped to sort it.

it's an easy mistake, but could be a very big one, one day - so jsut check it when riding at random points. long, boring, slow straights tend to be the time i do it - when not as much concentration is needed and i feel a little bored and want something to do.

playing with my helmet is always the first choice to cure boredom! Wink

i do it probably every other day, but have developed quite a nack for doing it up on the move with just the left hand, took a while to do it quickly but now it only takes a second or two.

the first couple of times i thought some little chavvy types were throwing stuff at me or something had come of the front of the bike and got thrown skyward Rolling Eyes

I still do this on rare occasions... usually early in the morning and normally catch it before I reach the end of my road.

The one that annoys me more is when I'm in a rush and I stick my gloves on before I've done up my lid... I then stubbornly struggle with the strap (double d's) for a few minutes before I surrender and take my gloves off again!

Yeah both mine and the missus' helmet are double D-ring types and it's bloody annoying if I forget to do mine up before putting the gloves on. Even more annoying is that the other half can't do them up herself yet so I always have to do it for her... Still, they are the most secure type of fastener.

Phew, it's not just me then! (that's what I love about BCF - sharing!!) Laughing

Done it twice now - once in training and then again with new lid. I've got into the very OCD style habit of check, check and re-check ever since.

On ride out yesterday I had to pull over as visor pinged off on one side - not sure how come, as had been riding for some time and was going thru' 20mph limit at the time! Another thing for me to check again and again. I'll not get off the driveway if it gets any worse! Embarassed

Me too, it's one of my little biking habits, I also have a tendency to 'adjust' my helmet by moving it around even though it's perfectly comfortable... Rolling Eyes

Happens to me to, it is in the same box as forgetting the disk lock and not checking pockets are zipped.

Happens more if I am distracted while preparing to mount, talking to someone or in a hurry. So I try and not rush my climb on and get a routine going.

I did this on my test, as I noticed the power drop I quickly fumbled around to get it back on and wobbled everywhere, approaching a junction. I passed...

I gave my mate and his rear wheel a lift to a tyre place on my bike.

When it was all done he hopped on the back and wedged the wheel between us. I got about a 100 yards before he started shouting that he had left his helmet behind at the shop. We'd both been riding about 15 years each then.

He later admitted to me that he'd once done a mile without realising he hadn't swapped his slippers for his normal boots.

I can beat that.

Shortly after getting my old C90, I set off and got all the way to the next town, before realising something was missing.

Er.

Where's my helmet? Oh, it's at home.

Wondered why I was getting funny looks from passing motorists Laughing

Ive done it once, spent so long trying to get my ear phones in position i completely forgot, but the plastic bit on the double d link slaps the side of the lid really hard so quickly reminded me.

Oh all most forgot. My worst noob mistake was just recently.

Picked up my new mille about a week before, i drove it to training and parked up. Did full days training and i was shatterd. took my gear to my bike and started getting changed, using footrest to put my foot on whilst trying to get in my leathers.

Anyway i got all my gear on and went to start the bike. Click...Click...Click Oh Sh*T, i was 12 miles from home and couldn't work out what it was. Milles have a common problem where the starter relay goes, and it sounded the same as when mine went before. so i did some testing of the relay that was clicking and that was fine so i assumed it must have been the start relay. After 20 minutes i called my mate to come and jump start me, he got some pliers out so we could bypass the starter relay quickly and get it going. I stuck it in neutral, we jumped it and off i went home. When we got back it started straight away. I was baffled untill i realised i had to put it into neutral before i jumped it. Rolling Eyes

Rather bad noob mistake, even worse as he had been biker for years and reminded me to put it into neutral. Rolling Eyes

How many people still put their gloves on before doing the helmet up? I know I do!
