PostPosted: 14:13 - 19 Aug 2008    Post subject: First Crash - Stupid u turning drivers :( Reply with quote

Just had my first crash.
Crashing Hurts.
It was at he big anchor near old trafford in trafford park. Was coming up to a set of lights in the right hand lane. People carrier was in the left hand lane waiting at the lights. As ive come up to them the lights have changed to green so ive gone straight through. People carrier set off and proceeded to do a u turn stright across my path.
Hit him straight in the front right wing, ripped his bumper off and flipped over the bonnet, landed on my back and skidded down a bit. Looking at my helmet ive cracked the back of my heed too Sad
Luckily an undercover police car appeared about 30 seconds after i got up and theyve got all the details - the guys admited it was his fault- just dont know what he was thinking trying a u turn from the left lane without looking or indicating.
He was an irish guy too on holiday - but got all his details for the insurance to sort out.
My poor bikes a bit of a mess, loads of fairing damange down the left hand side (pix will be up in a bit), engine cases, nose cone, mirrors, and its now leaning LOADS to the left on its side stand - just cant belive the forks are still gonna be straight.
Was fine straight after, got a few bruses and scraped on my lower back where my jacket rode up so nothing too major.
Just waiting for a lift to hospital now as the police reccomended i go get checked out.
Im absolutely gutted.

Unlucky.

Theres no explaining some folk... Having been on the roads in Ireland and more recently Ulster, they are a bit nutty.

Hope you get it all sorted with minimum fuss.

Thumbs Up

have fun sitting in a NHS hospital for 6-10 hours.

Sorry mate but the cash will try to repair any damage. I feel for you but what can you do?

Was the irish guy apologetic? Tend to find this helps.

If its anything like mine chances are you'll have torn / sprained / strained various muscles which in my case took 1/2 hour or more to really kick in.

Just take it easy for a bit then start exercising slowly to stop them tightening up too much.

All the best.

Just had to get an estimate done for the CBR954RR... Was flicked off of it a few Sundays ago...

Riding near Tower Bridge, traffic was stationary so me and a few other scooters (commuters) were basically coasting doing about 10/15 mph on the outside.

This utter tw*t decided to do a u-turn (well try to) without looking and using his mirrors and not even using his indicator. Seeing as it was raining I knew I had no where to go, yanked on the fron brake which locked and collided with him... I went straight into his door, wing and busted up his bonnet and front headlamp - you can imagine where I was when he started turning...

His first sentence to me was "WHAT WERE YOU DOING?!" (Note: I was still on the floor at this present moment in time) Mad

I swear I almost hit him, thinking about it now I should have (wouldnt have got me anywhere but would have made me feel good)

Hope your injuries are ok, they will get worse as time goes on. Claim for personal injury and rinse him...

Good Luck

Interesting thing I learnt was that you don't have to indicate to do a U turn. There's actually no recognised signal for it in the highway code. In fact, indicating could be dangerous as other folks might think you're turning right/overtaking. Shocked

That said, the driver is still a complete idiot for not checking mirrors and blind spot. Would have expected him to indicate to change lanes at least. No excuse, terrible driving. Main thing is you're ok, hope your injuries aren't too severe. Thumbs Up

dunno about the bike yet, going to check it over properly tomorrow, but i just cant see how the forks are straight cos its leaning at about 45 degrees on its sidestand Sad
gotta try and sort stuff out with the insurance tomorrow.
guy was really appologetic and stopped straight away and tried to help so really dont think there was any intent - he just didnt look.
got all his details and two undercover coppers appeared after about a minute after id got the bike up. they got all his details and he said he was trying to u turn so hopefully wont have any probs.
just lucky i got away with nothing to me really Smile

hopefully a few pics and a good couple of witness statements along with it. Keeps the old "He was doing 900mph and i looked and he must of been speeding" stories at bay.

Did the coppers do a check on him and his details?

I knew of someone who was given details, when they rang up to claim, the insurance company had never heard of him, and the mobile number wasn't real. It gave them a lot of hassle till the end.

Sounds like you got off quite lightly and that it could have been a heck of a lot worse, especially as the guy was trying to do a U-Turn. If you had hit him at right angles,......well lets not go there.

I imagine your bike will be a financial write off by the sound of things, and even if it does get fixed up you know that it'll never "feel" the same, so on the bright side you've got a new bike to look forwards to Very Happy

Compensation wise, I surprised you didn't stay on your back and get carted off to hospital. Make sure you go to the doctors and get everything officially documented, and don't be afraid to mention every little ache, bruise, pain, chip, splintered fingernail that you have. Take photos of all your injuries and take photos of all your gear, everything. Even if your boots a little scuffed, claim for them.

I got knocked off three months ago and I've learned the hard way that you should claim for everything that you can, without taking the piss so to speak.

So get back in the saddle soon, and hope you get a decent lump of compo Thumbs Up

Rang the insurance and now the fun begins trying to get everything sorted - waiting for a phone call to get get the bike picked up by someone and have the damage assessed Sad

That'll be written off looking at those pics, at least you are alright though Thumbs Up

Nice bike, the cat was nice in the metallic red, I had the metallic blue one... looked soo much classier than the old yellow/black & red/black/white models.

You are a brave man letting those blue spots get so dirty, they are the worst callipers on the planet for seizing.

There doesn't need to be a signal for a u-turn, u-turns shouldn't be done unless the road is clear!

I just wrote off my first bike Sad
The insurance guys just been round and said its touch and go as to whether they can repair it for the money they get because of the age of the bike (it was a 2000 reg) so its gone.
Although in a way its good - cos if it was repaired id have to pay the excess on my policy at 300 quid Shocked then sue the other guy to get it back.
As it stands my policy had an excess waver if the bike was written off so i get to pay nuffin and should get the full amount back.
I win Thumbs Up
Just need my cheque now.
Anyone wanna sell me a GSXR 750 Smile
