Although I am semi against GPS since I've managed to tour without them and find interesting places which I would never have found following explict GPS intrusctions.

What do you use outside Europe ie Russia/Ukraine/Asia centra and Far eastern Asia?.

My primary want is just for where am I coordinates and thus something like the Garmin Etrex seems suitable... And to compare such coordinates with a map.... and for the European bit where I need to pass through to get anywhere I write down coordinates for hotel / camp site or bike shop for spares and such like. And to use the re-trace your steps feature, as I don't think there are many sign posts in Siberia or the desert...

Or maybe something to hook up to a PDA of some sort, any ideas on this?.

I don't quite think a generic tom tom or Garmin will be useful in central Asia.

Any thoughts on a fairly cheap GPS device? , as said I will primarily rely on compass + maps , but better to have it than not eh?.

Hi

Do you have a PDA?

For what you are wanting I would be tempted to use a PDA and a cheap bluetooth GPS unit (both of which you should be able to wire up to charge from the bike).

There is some free software that will display the basic info you want:-

https://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/default.htm

I use it for recording GPS logs of speed, etc, but will work fine for what you want.

That lot should be pretty cheap to sort out, especially if you already have a PDA.

All the best

Keith

I have Mick's old PDA phone combo thingie a 02 XDA Mini S, which runs windows mobile....

But I thought that Couriers didn't like PDAs because they died too easily through the vibes on tarmac , me reckons it won't survive off the beaten track.

Hi

As you will not be using it to follow directions it probably won't matter. Just pack it wrapped up in clothes to protect it, and dig out and switch on when required.

For some PDAs you can buy pretty tough metal cases. Charlotte has had them on both her IPAQs, and they have protected them from being dropped numerous times.

All the best

I got one of those ally pda cases for my Ipaq. Quite tough, but I doubt it`ll protect it from anything other than a minor drop
