Going through parliament today.

If sucessfull, it would be illegal for English businesses to refuse to accept Scottish banknotes if they already accept English ones.

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7841273.stm

About time too.

There is more backup behind Scottish issued banknotes than there is behind English ones anyway. For a Scottish bank to issue notes, they are required to lodge funds equivalent to 30% of the total value of notes in circulation with the Bank of England for 3 days a week. The bank of England doesn't have to show it has the funds to back up its currency in any way.

Read this this morning too...

I didn't realise that Scottish money wasn't technically legal anywhere in the UK, it certainly puts a stop to the scene you get in a shop south of the border where someone invokes the "but its legal tender" clause at the check out. (And in some cases, vice versa with English money...)

I remember years ago I used to manage an amusement arcade, this just when we moved over to the smaller 50p pieces. An older lady came in with some new fifties and asked if we accepted them north of the border.

I of course said no, we were still trading dead chickens for rabbit pelts and the like... (I didn't say that at all... Wink )

Thumbs Up

I think the "discrimination" is a touch over the top, "ignorance" maybe - although, like pa_broon74 I never realised that it wasn't technically legal tender (and I'm English! Wink ).

Hi

Not really discrimination. As I understand it their legal position is the same as that of debit cards or cheques, and as such traders are quite at liberty to refuse them.

Notice that there doesn't seem to be anything pushing them to accept Ulster bank notes, which are far more likely to be rejected.

All the best

Keith

I got given a £5 Northern Ireland note in the change a couple of months back. I had real difficulty getting any mainstream shops to accept it. In the end I had to go to the Post Office and exchange it for an English note.

Last night my missus had a bloke from NI come in with only NI note, so she changed the entire lot for him! Whenever we go back over to NI, we just try to get rid of all notes before we come back cos people are a bloody nightmare about them. I've never had trouble with Scottish notes though!

Yeahh comments like no that's Irish , Hmm No Ireland's Euro.

Saying that in the South until near Euro time you could often use Sterling as it was nearly always at parity. I think until the late 70's the republic was at fixed parity.

That a side. Were probably going to be in the Euro very very soon.

This fuxk wit is to blame

So the effective demise of both RBS and BoS is just an illusion?

On what basis? To my mind, it's the very last thing we should be considering but I'm interested in hearing your rationale. Look at the problems facing Ireland and Spain in particular; yet they have no freedom to determine their domestic interest rates.

Erm no we no longer qualify for entry into the Euro anymore , we have debts over 60% GDP, about 300% , hence even if we wanted to join they wouldn't let us..

Also if we joined the Euro our debts would get bigger AND the country could not print money to make up the short fall as the money supply is controlled by frankfurt.
