Ok, not exciting, going by most write-ups in here, but it was a tour on my bike, with camping gear.

Set off from Blackpool at 2pm, it was raining quite heavily, so it was a steady 60-70mph on M55, M6, M62. The rain never let up at all and the traffic was heavy on M62 as well. I ended up filtering between lanes 2 & 3 from Bolton until I hit the Ferrybridge services on A1. That made for a tiring first part of my 253 mile journey. I had to be at the campsite I had booked before 8pm, so I just had a quick break then set off again. It was now raining even heavier and A1 was just as busy as the motorway. At last A17, known as the Red Route, 45 people died on that road in July, there is a board with numbers on, like a cricket score board. By 5.20pm I had only made it as far as a service station before Sleaford. I was wet (well hands were) and tired, so stopped at a greasy spoon for a drink and a slice of apple & blackburry (how they spelt it) pie. Time to move on, Loads of speed cameras on A17, forward facing & rear facing ones. I reached Kings Lynn by 6.45pm, sun was shining here, so I was able to make better progress I had just over an hour to reach my destination if I was to pitch tent in daylight. Finally arrived at site at 7.45pm, just in time. there was only 1 other tent there, so I was told I could pitch wherever I wanted. Found a nice little spot, not too waterlogged where I could put bike & tent, 20 minutes later I had my tea cooking (lamb chops, tomatoes, bread rolls and I made use of the free microwave and did a jacket potato to go with it)

Saturday morning, woke up to a dry bright day, although it had been raining most of the night - so I was told! Decisions on where to go. made breakfast, (burger, sausage, tomato barm cakes). Decided to head for Wroxham, on A140, what a boring road with loads of speed cameras on it. arrived at Wroxham, it was very busy, so decided to continue on to Stalham, using A1151. Stopped next to the Broads museum at the Staithe in Stalham. Lovely restaurant opposite it, cup of tea & lemon tart, £3.70, sat outside in sunshine and just chilled. decided to have a look at museum, paid £4 to walk around it. Not worth it unless you are really into the history of the Broads. I dawdled around and talked to the volunteer for that day for 25 minutes and it still only took an hour of my time. Went from Stalham onto Great Yarmouth, went down some nice little roads by mistake, and parked bike infront of the pier, next to some poor wreck of a bike. Went for a wander around a cleaner version of Blackpool. As I was walking some scruffy looking biker came up to me & introduced himself as Ketch Shocked Turns out he was the owner of the bike I had parked next to. I quicly made my excuses and set off in search of some chips. (The outdoor market has about 6 chip stalls) I sat down to relax and was rudely interrupted by a marching band. time to move. A quick walk along the pier and back on the bike. I decided as it was just gone 3pm to head back to tent along the coast road. I went through California - all caravan parks, was going to stop at hemsby but that is worse than Blackpool, eventually ending up at Horsey. I stopped there for a drink, glad I did, the shop keeper was hilarious and got total strangers talking to each other. After a couple of highly recommended tea cakes I paid to go up the mill there. That was enjoyable, worth it for the view over Hickling Broad. the land is so flat around Norfolk that you can see for miles from a building that is not that tall. It had now started raining, so I donned waterproffs and set off, stopping at happisburgh to photograph the lighthouse and eventually reaching Mundesley. I stopped here to have a walk along the beach and to make adjustment to chain. Back on bike, eventually reaching the campsite. it had been a long day and the coast road that I thought would be a good road to ride was awful, there seemed to be gravel on every flipping decent corner.

Sunday morning, another bright, dry start, breakfast - full English with toast, tent packed up and on bike ready to go - not - where had I put the key? 45 mins later, key was found under tank bag Embarassed
Decided to use A149 to head out, again, stopping at Cromer first to relive some childhood memories. The coast road like previous day was gravelly and made the ride slow. Stopped in Hunstanton for a break, watched the surfers, using kites (must be a name for what they were doing, but don't know it) and some fella actually sitting in a basket beneath a kite going up & down the beach. I was going to have a walk around the castle at Castle rising, but refused to pay £4 to look at a pile of stones lol. King Lynn next, what a horrible looking town, full of industrial units and scruffy looking housing estates. I was going to stop here, but went on to Sleaford instead. Decided to take my time getting home and as it was dry until Newark I enjoyed the A17 this time. 10 hours after I left Norfolk, home again. Just got to get tent dry for my next trip out in 2 weeks time

Thanks guys, think I am reliving my childhood, doing all the things I should have done before kids. Just pack the bike and pick a direction and go, it can be fun. I have lost my weekend riding partner, so I am travelling solo.
Thinking of North Wales in 2 weeks time

Where are you going in Scotland charlie? I can recommend riding through Glencoe, mind you any road in Scotland is better than most roads in England.

Hey I live in Norfolk and have been to most of the places you visited Smile

Its interesting to see you say that Yarmouth is like a cleaner Blackpool, as its got the reputation of being a bit of a dive, but to be honest they have put a lot of effort into cleaning the place up (well at least the sea front) and its good that it seems to be paying off.

There are some nice places in Norfolk, not sure if I'd find a enough to do to fill a whole trip, but glad you had a good time, shame the weather as been so crap over the last couple of weeks.

You should of hired a boat for the day on the broards, I used to live a few miles from Wroxham, the are some nights sights (and pubs) that you can visit by boat Thumbs Up Smile

Yarmouth was quite pleasant to walk around, Hemsby I would imagine is hell on earth with all those caravan parks & amusement arcades, I thought it was worse than Blackpool. I would have loved to go on a boat on the Broads, but I wanted to travel around a bit and only had 1 full day there. I was lucky with the weather though, Saturday was relatively dry and Sunday was dry for my journey home.

Funny about where you live, people spend a week or more in Blackpool, I think it is sh1t and spend all my spare time trying to get away from the place, but when you are on a break from home anywhere you go is a change and you can always find somewhere interesting to go. I could have spent many hours at Horsey, just sitting there and enjoying the peace & tranquility.
I don't think I will take the bike back to Norfolk, it is just too flat and not enough decent roads to ride.

Is somewhere being too flat a negative? Rolling Eyes

And there are plenty of good motorbiking roads in Naaaarfolk, like anywhere you visit your not just going to immediately ride on the most superb road there is to offer, you have to look for it. Although the better ones are in Suffolk (which im on the border to, so don't call me inbred).

Also to add, you were riding mostly on the coast? Most of those roads are just straight (the acle straight for example) so no wonder you got a bad image of the roads. Laughing

I took advice on where to go from a biker who lives in Cromer, he said the best road around the area was the coast road, it had loads of great bends on it. he was right, but he was also right about it being full of loose gravel.

Being flat is not really a negative, but it is nice to not be able to see most of the scenery at once. If you have hills & bends then there is a surprise around every corner. Maybe I have been spoiled by riding the roads in the Dales, Wales & The Lakes frequently.

Don't get me wrong, Norfolk is a beautiful place, I enjoyed a holiday there in my childhood and enjoyed my weekend there this year. I have come home with some great memories from my brief time there.

Don't worry, no offence was taken, as said it is a beautiful coastline and the villages around the Broads are lovely places to totally chill. Very Happy

Good on you for going on your own.

I did a 10 day trip to Germany solo in June and had a great time. I keep thinking about slinging the tent on the bike and heading off on short trips like you have, but for some reason I feel more uncomfortable about solo touring in the UK than I did abroad.

Just be careful if you do go near suffolk as when people over there cross the road they dont move that fast due to the webbed toes Laughing

I am now thinking of a solo tour abroad next year, but travelling solo in this country is great. I might be alone, but I have met some great people, had loads of fun and never felt lonely. Admittedly I first went to east coast for one night as a means of running away from sh*t at home and my Scotland trip was also a form of running away, but now I just love throwing stuff on bike and heading off. I have just got back from wales and am thinking about where I can go in 2 weeks time Laughing I am not running anymore, I am living my life and aiming to have no regrets at the end of my days.
