 |
|
Ok, sometime last year I was intending to go to Edinburgh to see my friend at Uni but it failed through due to money and bike problems. But this year, I have money and the bike is solid so it's just trip there and back and sorting out where to store the bike.
I'd be going up to Newcastle first to visit my best friend for freshers week (he told me to come up) and I can't say no... I've also booked the holidays off already. And the second part of the week it will be Edinburgh to visit my friend who I was supposed to visit last year...
So if anyone could give me any ideas on routes there and/or back and if possible where I could store the bike and stuff. I have a big Oxford monster chain lock, disc lock and bycicle chain lock set thing which lets me wrap the whole of the bike to the lamp post (it secured my Hornet for 2 weeks on a heavy used country lane from High Wycombe to Princes Risborough). Do I have to pay to park in any of those places at all or sitll free?
Also, anyone wanna meet up? In Eindburgh my friend will have lectures during the day and stuff so if anyones free I'd happily meet up.
Thanks all!

Hi.
I live in Edinburgh so can help you out there, in terms of parking and routes in; where abouts will you be staying. Parking is still free in Edinburgh for bikes with bike bays here and there.
The city centre is a bit of a nightmare at the moment and there are road works in all southerly routes in, but, if you're on two wheels you should be ok.
There are some not so nice areas where I wouldn't leave a bike (locked or not.) But if your friend is a student, he'll be somewhere not so bad (Sciences maybe or The Pleasence area??) You're bike should be ok.
If you've got any questions give us a shout.

Excellent thanks. I have no idea just yet.. will ask her whereabouts. She's living in a flat although I have no idea where... I know it's near some big park...
Just had the bike checked today for any worries with the engine and they said it's A* ok! So I'm happy with that. Brake pads are done and suspension will be done soon! ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

Aiight Molly.
If youre travelling on the Saturday on the way back, go via York and I'll pop across to meet you no probs matey.
If you want a normal quick route, head your way and Just hit the A1 and head north
You could also go via York/Thirsk and hit the A19, again, just head north Takes you up past Sunderland with a few good roads and 100miles of boring stuff. I dont know about Newcastle on toe Edinburgh though. Can Titz help you out with that?
Ill be up for meeting ya matey Might be in car though ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

This is the route I would take from the Toon to Edinburgh.
You could cut out the short leg through Rothbury (and just go up the A696), but it is an astonishing road, a beasty ribbon of tarmac slapped on the Northumbrian countryside. I should know, I must have been up that route well over 200 times in my life.
The A68 is the way to go - twisty, open, great scenery and good corners. DO NOT go any other way, you will have missed one of the UK's best journeys.
Have fun in the Toon, tis sweet. |

OK. I'm off up north tomorrow. Not to Edinburgh but slightly more up north to visit my grandparents first. Staying the night and then on Thursday will make my way down to Edinburgh. And I /think/ on the Saturday I will ride down to Newcastle and take the A68 there as mentioned here.
Bike's all ready to go. Fresh tyres, new oil, chain and sprockets spotlessly cleaned and lubed, (will lube it up again tomorrow morning), brake pads changed all around and will give her a quick clean, clay, wax and polish in the morning.
