Has anyone done it and what did you gain from doing the Advanced test?
Got some spare time on my hands so thinking about doing it.

My local group offers a 'free' first session.
Not all groups are the same, but mine seems to be good and is worth a go.

I don't think any kind of self-righteous bike person could have been happy to have me riding with them in a CCM covered in mud, no kickstand, a dodgy brake light, loud can and a GPS gaffa-taped to the clocks as a speedo. They mentioned the brake light, but only in a helpful way (I had thought I had sorted it, so it was useful to know).
First went in on crutches and have ridden various bikes and kit in various states and never had any negative comments my way.

Be careful of the self-righteous people out to label you when you do it, though Razz.

I think the main benefit is that you become more aware of what is going on around you. This means that you plan better, ride smoother, and reduce risk. The biggest benefit for me was a massive increase in confidence when riding in very poor conditions.

You don't need the IAM to do this, you can go and buy the police riders handbook and read how they do it but you don't get the benefit of an experienced, unbiased, trained, observer. Ignore the stereotypical descriptions of these guys, the vast majority are just normal people who enjoy riding and want to try and help others.

Most will give a free evaluation ride, gives you and idea of what to expect.

If your serious then it may be worth taking a look at the ROSPA course as well.

I took an advanced type test today (MIDAS, a minibus assesment for the local authority), total waste of my time and a waste of the schools money.

I was expecting a CAMRA-style reference, but not quite that quickly. Wink

I did it, it helped me a lot with my observation and smoothness, which has made me quicker. It can be a bit dull sticking to the speed limits when your training for your test, although they don't mind so much when your in the nationals you still have to reign it in a bit, when I go out riding with them now just free riding its not so strict.

Most of the guys were alright, but there are a few self righteous ones as well, especially if you'd been overtaken by some "idiots" on the 1st part of the ride they'd have a bit of a moan. But lots of them have been riding for ages and can pass on some good tips.

Its also useful in helping me get up early on a sunday morning to go for a ride when the roads are quiet, but I don't go every week by any means.
