I own a 2001 ZX7R, i bought it to replace my old one in October.

After a nightmare couple of months, rebuilding these calipers after they had pretty much seized up in winter. No one could work out why they werent performing as they should be when back on the bike.
I replaced the master cylinder, seals and swapped some pistons from another set of same calipers...with no joy. Fault finding and research was most of this time, but then i went travelling.

Between me and a friend we've now solved the problem.
The forks.
The forks i assume now had taken quite a bash, the left hand fork had taken a whack and moved around 5mm higher than the other one through the yolk.
Symptoms of such a problem are very similar to badly functioning calipers. The discs seem to be on all the time, there's piss all pressure in the system and pistons don't return properly.

We reset them back down, bunged in new pads, and they are better than ever.
I can't believe it, im gutted...so much time/money/stress on these calipers only to find something like this.

Im making this post for two reasons, one, because some of you may have the same issue and two...just wanted to share it with you. lol

I went out on the old girl yesterday for a hoon, new MOT, almost new braking system...it's good to be back.
Thumbs Up

I know what you mean,

I have had my ZX6R for nearly a month now and the brakes were never great, Those Tokico 6-Pots again, Anyway, after bleeding, checking the seals, checking the master cylinder i resolved myself to buying some new calipers,

My god what a difference, felt ok at first while the pads were bedding in, then i just took the bike out for a 3 hour ride, amazing, it has everything i need now (touch wood may it remain that way), Power, Handling and big fuckoff 6-pot brakes. Got a big cheer from some drunks when i pulled a mahoosive stoppie to let them cross.

Im also very happy with having decent brakes again Thumbs Up

Glad you wrote this up.

It's just not something I would have thought of to check in that situation.

I understand how you feel.

Just been rebuilding mine over and over because they are binding only to find out that the forks are slightly twisted in the yokes we believe. Possibly next weekend when i have the time will sort that but i imagine my brakes will be sh*t hot once Ive sorted this out.

You didn't notice they were sticking out uneven by 5mm? Shocked

Was the handling not totally ruined?

Hmm to be fair maybe have been less than that, it was hard to notice as there is a chamfer at the top which gives the illusion its ok. Looking from riding position anyway.

Nothing worse than spending a lot on fault finding only to find it was a completely different part Sad

But still I prefer the feeling of an hours ride after being off the road for 3 weeks Laughing
