Hi

I have a small (slow) oil leak from the bottom of the crank case of my 54-plate cg125 - I cant be sure exactly where it originates but the oil is apparent along the edge of the case where the gear shift lever enters the case.

I have only noticed this recently - and only after I heard some unusual noises coming from the general area of the engine when slowing down at traffic lights from ~65mph to a complete standstill (note: the noise only happens when slowing down from sustained ~65mph speed).

Its difficult to explain the noise - but it disappears after I change down gears from say 4 to 3.

Is this is a common problem and something to be concerned about?

In case its relevant the oil level is only just above minimum (according to the dipper) - but I did top it up recently as it was not even registering on the dipper.

Thanks in advance
Mark

sounds like it could be your gear selector shaft seal. about £2 from a dealer, whip off the cover, drive a wood screw into the existing seal and yank it out, then drift in the new one making sure the lips of the seal seat.

personally i always keep my oil right at the MAX mark, i think its best to as it means the engine is always lubricated correctly.

thanks for the quick feedback - that might save me the cost of a trip to the nearest bike shop.

I also read on tinternet about the possibility of a leaking/pinched crankcase breather tube. Im not sure where this is - or if it applies to this scenario.

FYI I bought the bike 2nd hand in March '08 (my first bike!) and had it serviced at the local honda bike dealer (bransons, gloucester) to ensure it was all kosher - but I noticed the oil level didnt register on the dipper from day 1 after the service - I thought I must be measuring it wrong (as the dipper on this bike is a bit crap). I recently (about 3 weeks ago) topped the oil up on the off-chance that I should believe what I was seeing (and yes it was on flat ground). I personally think the dealer didnt put in as much oil as they should have - but maybe Im being paranoid. I'll get a Haynes and do it myself from now on.

its apparantly notoriosly difficult to kill a CG. after this much time, i would imagine the first thing you would notice as far as the engine eating itsself would be the clutch wouldnt't act normally (as its sump lubricated).
